Falcon senior earns conference weekly honor
Bowling Green State University tennis senior Katia Babina has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office has announced. Babina earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Babina, a native of Glenview, Ill. (Glenbrook South H.S.), was a perfect 4-0 as the Falcons won a pair of matches last weekend. She was victorious at the number-two singles and number-two doubles flights in BGSU's wins over IPFW and Youngstown State at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. The Falcons downed IPFW, 6-1, on Saturday evening (Jan. 30), before posting a 7-0 win over YSU the following day (Jan. 31).
Babina lost a total of only five games in her four singles sets, defeating IPFW's Ingrid Ballus by scores of 6-0 and 6-3, and downing YSU's Anna Volkova by identical 6-1 scores.
In doubles action, Babina teamed with freshman Jade Johnson for a pair of victories at the middle flight. In the 'spring' portion of the season, Babina has a 4-2 singles record, and has teamed with Johnson for a 5-1 doubles mark.
Overall, Babina has a 10-6 singles record and a 10-4 doubles mark this season to date. She now has a career total of 56 singles wins, tying her for 17th in school history. Babina is deadlocked for 13th on the doubles wins list, with 59,and is 18th in BGSU annals with a combined career total of 115 wins.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean, currently 5-1 in dual-match play, are idle from intercollegiate competition until a match vs. Detroit at the PTC on Friday, Feb. 12. That match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
