BGSU Announces 2010 Women's Soccer Schedule
March 15, 2010 | Women's Soccer
School-record 12 home regular-season games include 2 each vs. the Big East and Big Ten
A school-record 12 home regular-season matches – including two each against Big Ten and Big East Conference opposition – highlight the 2010 Bowling Green State University women's soccer schedule, announced by Falcon head coach Andy Richards. BGSU is slated to play a total of 20 regular-season contests, including a dozen inside the friendly confines of Cochrane Field.
“I am excited about our 2010 schedule,” said Richards, who enters his 11th season at the BGSU helm. “We have a number of highly-challenging non-conference contests, with a great many of these standout games at home.
“We are pleased to have the chance to play a total of 12 regular-season games in front of our home crowd, and we are looking for a big turnaround in 2010.”
The Falcons' nine non-conference matches include six games at home. BGSU plays a pair of three-game homestands during the non-league portion of the season, including a season-opening stretch that includes contests vs. Big East foes Cincinnati (Aug. 22) and West Virginia (Aug. 27) at Cochrane.
BGSU also hosts Minnesota (Sept. 10) and Michigan State (Sept. 17) of the Big Ten, on back-to-back Fridays in mid-September. The Falcons' non-league slate also includes home games against Xavier (Aug. 29) and Cleveland State (Sept. 12), as well as trips to Niagara (Sept. 3), Saint Bonaventure (Sept. 5) and Indiana State (Sept. 19).
Five of the nine non-league opponents – Michigan State, Minnesota, Niagara, Saint Bonaventure and West Virginia – posted double-digit win totals a year ago, with MSU and WVU each advancing to the NCAA Championships.
In Mid-American Conference play, BGSU's 11-game schedule includes a home contest vs. defending league regular-season and tournament champion Central Michigan on Oct. 3. The Brown and Orange will play six of the 11 games at home, hosting Buffalo (Sept. 24), Kent State (Sept. 26), Akron (Oct. 15), Ohio (Oct. 17) and Miami (Oct. 28).
The league slate includes road trips to face Eastern Michigan (Oct. 1), Toledo (Oct. 8), Ball State (Oct. 10), Western Michigan (Oct. 22) and Northern Illinois (Oct. 24).
For the first time since 2003, the Falcons' final conference regular-season game is not against arch-rival UT. The Brown and Orange will close the regular-season campaign with the Oct. 28 game vs. Miami.
The 2010 MAC Tournament will begin on Sunday, Oct. 31, with quarterfinal games at campus sites. The four survivors from that day's play will converge upon the site of the highest-remaining seed for the semifinals on Nov. 5 and the championship game on Nov. 7. The MAC Tournament winner earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAAs.
“As always, we want to play well all season long,” said Richards. “But, we are hoping that our difficult non-conference schedule will help to prepare us for the conference schedule. And, we would like to be playing our best soccer of the season when the MAC Tournament rolls around.”
