Falcon junior earns conference weekly honor
Bowling Green State University tennis junior Christine Chiricosta has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday (March 17). Chiricosta earns the honor for the first time this season and the second time in her Falcon career.
Chiricosta, a native of Avon Lake, Ohio (Avon Lake H.S.), was a perfect 4-0 as the Falcons won a pair of matches last week. BGSU downed South Dakota, 7-0, before picking up a 5-2 win over Temple, with both matches held in the Orlando, Fla., area.
Chiricosta teamed with freshman Maddy Eccleston for an 8-0 win in the top doubles flight vs. USD, and she downed the Coyotes' Shadi Soleymani by identical 6-2 scores in her match at the number-one singles flight.
In the Temple match, Chiricosta teamed up with Eccleston for an 8-3 doubles victory, then downed the Owls' Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova at the top singles flight to help clinch the overall team win.
On the season, Chiricosta is 16-5 in singles, including a 9-3 mark in dual matches. In doubles, she has teamed with Eccleston for a 9-3 record in duals and a 13-5 overall ledger. Chiricosta leads the Falcons in singles victories (16) and is tied for the team lead in overall victories, with a 30-11 record this season to date.
Chiricosta is 17th on the BGSU career list for singles wins, with 58, and also ranks 17th on the doubles wins list (57). She has moved into 19th place on the combined career wins list, and has a record of 115-42 since her arrival in Northwest Ohio.
Chiricosta's selection marks the third time the Falcons have had a MAC Player-of-the-Week selection this year to date. Senior Katia Babina earned the honor on both Feb. 3 and March 3.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean, 9-3 in dual matches this year to date, close the non-conference portion of the schedule with a Friday (March 19) match vs. Duquesne. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
