March 22, 2010 | Softball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—With the tournament portion of the softball schedule completed, the Falcons have just one more game before conference play commences in less than two weeks. BGSU will take on the No. 4 University of Michigan Wolverines on Wednesday (March 24), for a mid-week match-up in Ann Arbor, Mich. Originally set to begin at 5:00 p.m., the BGSU and Michigan start time has changed to begin one hour earlier than the above mentioned time. The game is now set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
GAME NOTES
The Falcons have a long history of competing against the Wolverines, challenging the Michigan squad 22 times since the inception of the softball team at BGSU in 1979. The Falcons have an overall record of 4-18 against the nationally ranked squad, defeating the Wolverines in 1980, 1989, 1992 and 2003. The last times these two teams have met was in 2008 when BGSU fell to the Wolverines, 0-4.
About the Wolverines
The No. 4 squad in the nation has racked up an impressive overall non-conference record of 22-5 so far on the 2010 season. The Wolverines only losses have come to four nationally ranked teams, including, No.3 Missouri, No. 8 Alabama, No. 9 Georgia, No. 15 Texas and also the non-nationally ranked squad, Virginia.
The University of Michigan softball program is returning 15 players from 2009, including nine starters. Last season the Wolverines finished first in the Big Ten and fifth in the nation. Michigan ended the '09 with an overall record of 47-12 (17-2 in the Big Ten), and a first place finish in the conference. With that first place conference finish, Michigan went on to compete in the NCAA World Series where they tied for fifth in the nation.
Falcon Freshmen Contributions
Of the six freshmen on the 2010 Falcon squad, three have started 13-13 games. Those three Falcons, Hannah Fulk, Andrea Arney and Paige Berger are currently leading the team in a number of statistics, but have earned the top three batting averages on the team. Fulk fronts the team with a .323 batting average, while Arney is in second (.281) and Berger in third (.265). Amongst leading the team's batting average, Fulk also leads BGSU in hits (10--tied with Rachel Proehl), doubles (4), on-base percentage (.523) and is the most walked member of the team (11) this year. Berger has the most homeruns on the team (5) and boasts the highest slugging percentage (.765).
Sluggers Take Care of the Classroom
Amid three tournament trips to the south and gearing up for conference competition, the 2010 softball squad is also taking care of the classroom. Every member of the '10 team boasts a grade-point average of 3.0 and higher, including three players who have a perfect 4.0.
Falcons Finally Come Home!
Get ready Falcon fans…after 49 days, three tournaments and 15 contests, the Falcons will finally play their season debut at Meserve Softball Field with a double header against Central Michigan (April 2), beginning at 1:00 p.m. BGSU will round out their home opening weekend with back-to-back games against Eastern Michigan on Saturday and Sunday (April 3 and April 4).
