BGSU picks up win over South Dakota to open Florida trip
The Bowling Green State University tennis team began its spring trip on a most successful note, winning every match en route to a 7-0 victory over the University of South Dakota Tuesday morning (March 9) at Sanlando Park.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 8-3 in dual-match play this season, while the Coyotes drop to 5-9.
All eight players on head coach Penny Dean's roster picked up at least one win on Tuesday morning. In doubles, BGSU won two of the matches by 8-0 scores. Junior Christine Chiricosta and freshman Maddy Eccleston posted a shutout over their USD foes at the top flight, while senior co-captain Samantha Kintzel and freshman Katie Grubb won by an identical 8-nil score at the third flight.
At the middle flight, senior co-captain Katia Babina and freshman Jade Johnson won by an 8-3 outcome. Sophomore Jessica Easdale teamed with junior Mary-Catherine Beck for an 8-1 win in an exhibition doubles match.
In singles play, all six matches went to the Falcons in straight sets, with no BGSU play losing more than two games in a set. Chiricosta topped Shadi Soleymani by identical 6-2 scores at the number-one flight, while Babina defeated Melanie Rockne by 6-1, 6-1 scores at the second level.
Kintzel lost only four total games in her third-flight win, while Eccleston and Easdale dropping only three games apiece in their matches at the fourth and fifth flights, respectively. Grubb defeated USD's Kelsi Foster, 6-1, 6-1, at the sixth flight.
The Falcons remain in Florida for two more matches, beginning with a Wednesday (March 10) match vs. Temple. BGSU then faces North Dakota on Friday (March 12) before returning to the Midwest.
