The Bowling Green State University tennis team heads south for spring break, playing three matches during a trip to Orlando, Fla. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will take on South Dakota, Temple and North Dakota in a four-day span in the Sunshine State.
BGSU, 7-3 in dual matches this season, will meet South Dakota in Tuesday (March 9) action. That match will begin at 8:00 a.m. The next day (March 10), the Falcons will face Temple in a 10:30 a.m. dual, before facing North Dakota on Friday (March 12) at 3:00 p.m.

* BGSU vs. North Dakota - Friday, March 12 - 3:00 p.m. (www.mapquest.com/maps)
The South Dakota match will be played at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., while the Temple dual will be held at RDV Sportsplex in Orlando. BGSU will take on North Dakota at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando.
The Falcons' most recent action was a 5-2 win at Cleveland State on Friday, Feb. 26. Senior co-captain Katia Babina and freshman Jade Johnson each posted a pair of wins in that match. The duo teamed up for BGSU's lone doubles win, at the second flight, and each player picked up a singles win.
Babina's win came at the second flight, in straight sets over Maria Lazaris. For her efforts in the CSU match, Babina was named MAC Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Johnson battled back for a sixth-flight win over Mengdi Lu, losing only five total games in the second and third sets combined.
Sophomore Jessica Easdale also rebounded after losing her opening set at CSU, picking up a win over the Vikings' Charlotte Gibbons as the fifth flight. Senior co-captain Samantha Kintzel and freshman Maddy Eccleston each posted wins in straight sets, at the third and fourth flights, respectively.
Junior Christine Chiricosta is 7-3 in dual-match play at the top singles flight, but suffered a narrow loss in Cleveland. She is 14-5 overall this year, leading the team in singles victories.
Babina and Kintzel have identical 6-4 singles records in duals, playing at the second and third flights, respectively. Eccleston is 7-3 at the fourth flight since the start of dual-match play. Her record mirrors the team's, as her seven singles victories have come in the Falcons' seven dual-match wins. Her losses have come to the three teams that have defeated the Brown and Orange in duals -- Louisville, Michigan State and UIC.
Three players -- Easdale, Johnson and freshman Katie Grubb -- each have seen time at both the fifth and sixth flights in dual-match singles play. Easdale is 3-1 at the fifth flight, and has played at that level in each of the last four matches.
Grubb has played in six duals at the sixth flight, including four of the last five. Johnson, as mentioned earlier, represented the Falcons at flight number six against CSU.
All eight BGSU competitors have a singles record of .500 or better this season to date, with six of the eight having reached double digits in wins. Chiricosta leads the way with 14 singles victories, followed by Eccleston (13). Babina, Easdale and Kintzel all have 12 wins, while Grubb has 10 singles victories and Johnson nine.
In doubles play, the Falcons' top-two teams have 7-3 records since the start of the dual-match season. Chiricosta has teamed with Eccleston at the top flight for all 10 matches, while the Babina/Johnson tandem has been a constant at the second flight. Kintzel has teamed with Grubb for five matches and with Easdale for four at the third flight. The Kintzel/Grubb team has played in five of the last six duals (BG won the third-flight match by default at the other dual during that time).
South Dakota has a record of 4-8 heading into next week. The Coyotes will play Martin Methodist College on Monday (March 8) before meeting both the Falcons and Fairfield the following day. USD has lost three-straight matches and eight of the last nine after a 3-0 start. The Coyotes were picked to finish fifth in the Great West Conference this season, in the preseason coaches poll.
Temple currently has a dual-match record of 3-4. The Owls play at Penn State on Saturday (March 6) before heading south. Temple will face both BGSU and Hillsborough CC on Wednesday (March 10). The Owls have not played since a Feb. 19 win over Drexel, a 7-0 triumph that broke a two-game losing streak. TU saw three matches cancelled due to weather. Last year, the Owls finished with a 17-6 record and advanced to the championship match of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.
North Dakota is 3-6 on the year. The Fighting Sioux picked up a 6-1 win over St. Cloud State on Monday (March 1), snapping a three-match losing streak. UND will play a Saturday (March 6) home match vs. Gustavus Adolphus before jetting south. The Sioux then will face Valparaiso on March 11 before meeting the Falcons the following afternoon. UND was picked to finish fourth in the Great West Conference this year. The team went 10-10 last year, in its first season of Division-I competition.
According to available information, the Falcons have never met North Dakota, South Dakota or Temple in a women's tennis dual match.
Following the trip south, BGSU will have one more match before beginning the Mid-American Conference schedule. The Falcons will host Duquesne on Friday, March 19, at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. The Brown and Orange will commence league play the following weekend, with trips to Ball State (March 26) and defending champion Miami (March 27).
