BGSU now 2-0 on Florida trip
The Bowling Green State University tennis team won for the second time in as many days in Florida, picking up a 5-2 win over Temple University Wednesday morning/afternoon (March 10). The non-conference dual match was held at RDV Sportsplex in Orlando.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 9-3 on the season, and BGSU has won three consecutive matches, including two on the team's spring trip. The Owls drop to 3-6 on the year.
"This was a grind-it-out, grueling type of match in the hot sun," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "We were fortunate to win.
"We had three singles matches that went to tiebreakers, and were able to win two of them. That was a big difference in today's match."
The Falcons captured the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. At the top flight, junior Christine Chiricosta and freshman Maddy Eccleston took an 8-3 decision, while senior Katia Babina teamed with freshman Jade Johnson for an 8-5 victory at the middle flight.
In singles play, each of the top-two matches went to a tiebreaker after the Falcons and Owls split the first two sets. Chiricosta won her top-flight match over Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova, while Babina lost to Josephine Bergman by the slimmest of margins at the second flight. Bergman won by a 10-8 result in the tiebreaker.
The Brown and Orange won in straight sets at flights three and four, courtesy of senior Samantha Kintzel and Eccleston. Kintzel lost just two total games in her third-flight waxing of Theresa Stangl, while Eccleston captured two hard-fought, narrow sets against Lucie Pazderova.
Sophomore Jessica Easdale captured a three-set match for the Falcons at the fifth flight, while the Owls picked up a victory at the sixth level.
The Falcons will conclude the Florida trip with Friday's (March 12) match vs. North Dakota. That match begins at 3:00 p.m. in Orlando.
