Eagles Clip Falcons, 4-3
April 10, 2010 | Women's Tennis
For the second day in a row, the Bowling Green State University tennis team won the doubles point on the road, but saw the home team rally to take four singles contests and the match. On Saturday afternoon (April 10), it was Eastern Michigan University coming back to defeat the Falcons, 4-3, in Mid-American Conference action at the Chippewa Racquet Club.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 7-10 overall and 1-4 in MAC action. The Falcons drop to 11-7 and 1-4, respectively.
BGSU won at the first and third doubles flights for the second-straight afternoon, taking an early 1-0 lead. Junior Christine Chiricosta teamed with freshman Maddy Eccleston for an 8-4 win at the top flight. That duo has won three consecutive matches and seven of their last eight contests.
The Falcons clinched the doubles point when sophomore Jessica Easdale and freshman Katie Grubb combined for a 9-7 win at the third flight. The Eagles won the middle-flight match with an 8-5 decision.
In singles, however, the hosts evened the score, as Celine Donnet downed Grubb in sixth-flight action. Chiricosta regained the lead for the Brown and Orange, defeating Julia Breuss at the number-one flight. Chiricosta won the first set, 6-4, then held a 3-1 lead in the second when Breuss was forced to retire due to injury.
Eastern, however, picked up a victory at the second flight, as Miriam Westerink downed senior Katia Babina. Then, the Eagles took a 3-2 lead when Xu Chang outlasted senior Samantha Kintzel in three sets at the third flight.
Easdale downed EMU's Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr in three sets at flight four. The Falcon sophomore won a pair of 6-1 sets sandwiched around a narrow (6-4) setback in the second set.
But, Marcela Rivero was able to win the third set over Eccleston at the fifth flight, giving the Eagles the victory. Rivero won the opening set, 6-4, then dropped a 6-3 second set before bouncing back for a 6-2 win.
The Falcons now return home for the final three matches of the regular season, beginning with Friday's (April 16) match vs. Northern Illinois at Keefe Courts. BG also hosts Akron (April 23) and Buffalo (April 24) before heading to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the MAC Championships at the end of the month.
