No. 20 Buckeyes Sweep Falcons in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Bowling Green State University softball squad dropped a doubleheader to the No. 20 Ohio State Buckeyes Wednesday night (April 14), falling 4-0 in the first game and 10-0 in five innings in the second.

Following the twinbill, the Falcons are now 8-14 overall. BGSU remains 4-2 in Mid-American Conference competition heading into the weekend.
The Buckeyes, now 24-11 overall got a pair of strong pitching performances, as Melanie Nichols went the distance in game one and Megan Miller and Karisa Medrano combined for the shutout in game two.
In the opener, Nichols notched her team leading 12th victory for the Buckeyes, recording a career-high eight strikeouts.
Ohio State jumped ahead 3-0, scoring a single run in the first and two in the second. OSU was aided by a total of eight walks in the game, with both second-inning runs scoring via bases-loaded bases on balls.
OSU capped the scoring in the fourth inning, on an Alicia Herron double, a fielder's choice and a double steal with runners at the corners.
In the game, BGSU pitchers Melissa Bott and Zada Lines held the nationally-ranked Buckeyes to just four hits, but the walks proved to be the difference. BGSU had a total of seven hits at the plate, with Karmen Coffey going 2-for-3.
In the nightcap, the teams battled through a pair of scoreless innings before the Buckeyes exploded for six runs in the third. OSU put together five hits in that third frame, with Leah Ledford hitting a two-run single to left and Whitney Cooper adding an RBI base hit.
Brittany Goodchild, who had led off the OSU third with a double, had another two-bagger -- this time with the bases loaded -- in the fourth. The Buckeyes scored four times in the fourth to take a 10-run lead.
OSU's Alicia Herron went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, while teammate Sam Marder walked three times in game two and seven times in the doubleheader.
The Falcons' two hits in the nightcap included a double by Susan Sontag and a Rachel Proehl single.
BGSU concludes the home portion of the 2010 schedule this weekend, hosting Western Michigan in a Friday (April 16) doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Falcons then host Northern Illinois for single games on Saturday (April 17) at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday (April 18) at 1:00 p.m. at Meserve Field.
Sunday's game will be 'Senior Day,' as the Falcons will pay tribute to the team's two seniors, Coffey and Sontag. 'Senior Day' ceremonies will begin prior to the contest on Sunday, at approximately 12:50 p.m.
