Curt Miller Wins Roll Along Award
April 16, 2010 | General, Women's Basketball
Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Curt Miller has been awarded the athletic department's Roll Along Award. The award was announced by BGSU Vice President/Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Greg Christopher on Thursday morning (April 15).
The Roll Along Award is given to staff members who understand and live the theme of "18 Sports. 1 Team." The award provides an avenue to recognize outstanding individuals in the department who make an impact on others and make the department a better place for everyone, including the student-athletes. It is presented four times per year.
"What Curt Miller and his staff have done is remarkable," Christopher said. "The level of consistent excellence that they have produced is rare in college athletics. To win six Mid-American Conference regular season championships and advance to the NCAA Tournament in four of the past six years is impressive. Curt has shown a standard of excellence that everyone in our department strives to emulate."
Miller recently completed his ninth season at the helm of the women's basketball program, having proven himself to be one of the top coaches in the country. The Falcons have won six consecutive Mid-American Conference regular-season titles -- a league record -- and have captured four of the last six MAC Tournament crowns.
In 2009-10, Miller and the Falcons had an overall record of 27-7 and a MAC mark of 14-2. After winning the MAC's East Division title with the league's best overall record, the team won three more games at Quicken Loans Arena to capture the conference tourney crown and advance to the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in six years.
During the 2009-10 season, Miller earned both his 100th MAC victory (in a Jan. 23 win over Eastern Michigan) and his 200th overall win (Feb. 20 at Akron). He became the second-fastest coach in MAC women's basketball history to 100 conference wins, and was the fastest coach in league history to 200 overall victories.
BGSU had the MAC Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive season, as Lauren Prochaska earned the honor for the second-straight year, and Prochaska went on to earn MAC Tournament MVP honors as well.
Miller currently has an overall head-coaching record of 206-80 and a MAC mark of 108-36. Over the last seven years, however, Miller and the Falcons are 185-45 (.804) overall, 97-15 (.866) in MAC regular-season play and 115-18 (.865) in all games vs. league foes during that time.
In the classroom, Miller's teams have been equally successful. The Falcons ranked fifth in the entire nation on the WBCA's 2008-09 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll. The award recognized teams throughout the country that had the highest grade point averages for the 2008-09 academic year. The awards have not yet been announced for 2009-10.
The Falcons, who made the list for the second time in three years, had a team GPA of 3.470 for the '08-09 campaign. BGSU was the only MAC program on the list for 2008-09, and the Falcons were the only program from the state of Ohio in the Division-I Top 25.
Through the fall 2009 semester, the Falcons had a cumulative team GPA of 3.57. No fewer than 14 women's basketball student-athletes had a GPA of at least 3.25 during the fall of 2009, with six earning a perfect 4.00 GPA.
Two players, senior Laura Bugher and redshirt junior Maggie Hennegan, were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team for 2009-10. They were the only two MAC players to earn academic all-district honors.
No fewer than five Falcons -- Bugher, Hennegan, Prochaska and seniors Tara Breske and Tamika Nurse -- recently were named to the Academic All-MAC Team. BGSU's total of five honorees was a conference record, and no other school had more than one player named to the team.
Perhaps the most impressive statistic about the Miller Era is this: Every student-athlete who has played four years under Miller at BGSU has won at least one MAC title, has been to the NCAA Championships at least once, and has graduated.
Miller joins a list of Roll Along Award winners that includes Doug Boersma, Scot Bressler, Stephanie Sabaduquia and Stephanie Young.
