Freshman Adrienne Dick slams first longball of her career
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Bowling Green State University softball team opened Mid-American Conference competition with a pair of wins against Central Michigan. The Falcons rallied back in game one from a 3-2 deficit to upset the Chippewas' 6-4, and continued the winning streak with a 3-2 win in game two. The BGSU softball squad advances its record to 6-10 overall, 2-0 MAC, while CMU drops to 13-10 overall, 0-2 MAC.
While the pair of wins was an all-around Orange and Brown effort, the freshmen continue to make names for themselves as Adrienne Dick and Paige Berger each cranked out one homer each. In the circle, junior Melissa Bott picked up wins in both ends of the doubleheader.

BGSU Rallies Back in Seventh to Overwhelm CMU
With the first MAC and home game on the line for BGSU, it all came down to the seventh inning in the Falcons' first game against Central. When they rallied back from a 4-3 deficit going into the bottom of the inning to win 6-4, BGSU proved it was not a team to go out quietly.
Senior Karmen Coffey kick-started the Falcon offense with a single up the middle, and was able to advance to second on the following play when Hannah Fulk recorded a sacrifice bunt. Coffey continued rounding the bases, stealing third—her seventh stolen base of the 2010 season. Sophomore Melissa West was then able to reach first on an error by CMU's second baseman, allowing Coffey to run home and tie the game at 3-3. Up next, freshman Paige Berger, the leading homerun hitter of 2010, smashed the game-ending homer—her sixth of the season—to straightaway centerfield, to bring home West and give the softball squad its first MAC and home win of the 2010 campaign.
Although the Falcons were held to zero runs and zero hits in three of the seven innings, BGSU posted the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Rachel Proehl was able to round the bases and put the Falcons on the scoreboard. Later in the game, Proehl also recorded the Falcons' third run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Also posting runs for the Falcons were Hannah Fulk, Paige Berger, Melissa West, and Karmen Coffey. In addition to out-scoring the Chippewas, the Orange and Brown squad also out-hit CMU, seven hits to five.
On the defensive end, the Falcons kept the Chippewas tame in the beginning by shutting down CMU's offense, making two double plays, one in each of the first two innings.
From the mound, junior Melissa Bott kept the Chippewa bats quiet, holding CMU to just four runs, zero earned runs and five hits. Bott pitched all seven innings for the Falcons and recorded her third win as a pitcher of the season.
Falcons Start a Wininng Streak
With one win under their belt, the Falcons started a winning streak after topping CMU 3-2 in the second game of the doubleheader. The Falcons held the lead for a majority of the game but had to stay strong late in the game to earn the win.
Adrienne Dick nailed the first long ball of her career late in the bottom of the sixth to give the Falcons their second and final lead of the game. Dick's home run put the Falcons ahead for good.
In game two, four Falcons recorded six hits for the win, including Fulk who recorded two hits, resulting in one run, Dick a homer, Lines a hit and Coffey who also had two. Freshman Andrea Arney also posted a run for the Falcons after being walked.
BGSU played strong defense for the whole game, fending off CMU's seven hits. Junior Zada Lines started on the mound for the Falcons and allowed only six hits during her five point one innings in the circle. Bott relieved Lines in the top of the sixth, halting the Chippewas' scoring efforts and allowing just one hit. Bott improved her pitching record for the second time of the day and is now 4-5 from the mound.
The Falcons will look to advance the two-game winning streak tomorrow (April 3), hosting Eastern Michigan at 2:00 p.m. at Meserve Softball Field. Eastern Michigan (8-15) split a doubleheader with Toledo on Friday.
