Oxford, Ohio – The Miami (Ohio) softball team used a three-run sixth inning to break open a close game and defeated Bowling Green 6-3 in Mid-American Conference action Saturday. The Falcons were outhit 9-7 despite freshman Hannah Fulk's third home run of the season.
Miami scored single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead but Bowling Green stormed back in the top of the fifth. After the first two BGSU batters were put away, the Falcons went to work. Missy Bowman and Fulk had back-to-back doubles to plate one run and two batters later, Karmen Coffey doubled to cut the deficit to just one at 3-2. But the Falcons left the bases loaded and were unable to tie the game.
Bowling Green was set down in order in the top of the sixth and Miami then went to work to break open the 3-2 game. The RedHawks had two hits and were helped by an error in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-2 lead. In the top of the seventh, Fulk hit a one-out solo homer to make it 6-3 but she was the only Falcon to reach as Miami held on for the win.
Fulk and Coffey had two hits each and Fulk drove home two runs for Bowling Green. Zada Lines went the first four innings on the mound and took the loss, while Melissa Bott pitched the final two innings without allowing an earned run.
Miami improves to 22-20 overall and 7-6 in MAC play, while Bowling Green falls to 10-19 overall and 6-7 in league action. The two teams will square off again Sunday with a new start time of 11:30 a.m. due to expected rain in the area.
