Oxford, Ohio – The Bowling Green softball team outhit Miami 7-3 Sunday but the Falcons were undone by stellar defense from the RedHawks in a 3-2 loss Sunday.
Miami made a pair of diving catches that saved three runs during the contest and Bowling Green left six runners stranded on the afternoon. Freshman leadoff hitter Hannah Fulk went 3-for-4 and homered for the second straight day, while senior Susan Sontag was 2-for-3. Miami scored all three of its runs on one swing, a three-run homer from catcher Jenna McGivney in the fourth.
Bowling Green got things going quickly as Fulk singled to open the game. She eventually scored on Paige Berger's single down the left field line but the Falcons left two runners on in the inning. BGSU still led 1-0 until McGivney's homer in the fourth put Miami on top 3-1.
The Falcons threatened in the sixth when Susan Sontag doubled with one out but she was unable to move up. In the seventh, Fulk's home run cut the deficit to one but Bowling Green was unable to put anybody else on base and the Falcons came up just short.
Zada Lines pitched five strong innings except for McGivney's one at-bat in the fourth. She gave up just three hits and struck out four. Melissa Bott pitched one inning in relief, setting down all three batters she faced.
Miami improves to 23-20 overall and 8-6 in MAC play with the win. Bowling Green falls to 10-20 overall and 6-8 in the MAC. The Falcons will play a non-conference doubleheader at Notre Dame Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a make-up from a rain out earlier in the season.
