Berti, Grunden Named Papa John's Athletes Of The Week
April 26, 2010 | Baseball, General, Women's Golf
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Jon Berti and golfer Susy Grunden (winning it for the second week in a row).
Male Athlete of the Week
Jon Berti, a sophomore from Troy, Mich., hit .500 (11-for-22) and had four extra-base hits, including two home runs in five games this week as the Falcons went 5-0 and extended their winning streak to eight games. He led the team in home runs, RBI (8), slugging percentage (.909), stolen bases (5) and finished second in walks drawn (3) and on-base percentage (.560).
Female Athlete of the Week
Susy Grunden, a freshman from Krum, Texas, carded a 230 at the Mid-American Conference Championships to finish in a tie for 15th among the 45-player field. The freshman opened with a 78, followed by back-to-back 76's on Saturday or Sunday. In the final round, she birdied the final two holes en route to finishing the season with a 78.53 scoring average, the lowest single season scoring average in school history. The former record was held by Jenny Schnipke (78.54) during the 2003-04 season.
