Akron, Ohio – The Bowling Green softball team was unable to recapture the magic it had Sunday in a win over Kent State, losing to the top seeded Golden Flashes 8-0 Wednesday in the first round of the double-elimination MAC Tournament. The Falcons will drop into the loser's bracket to face fourth-seeded Ohio Thursday at 11 a.m.
Bowling Green managed just three hits off of MAC Pitcher of the Year Kylie Reynolds and the ace struck out eight batters over five innings to get the win. Zada Lines, who threw a one-hitter against Kent State Sunday, went just 2 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs in the loss.
Lines limited damage in the first inning, working around three hits and a walk to give up just one run, but Kent State dinged her for three more in the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Falcons had an opportunity to cut into the deficit offensively in the third when three batters reached in succession with one out.
Lindsay Arney beat out an infield single and Hannah Fulk reached on a fielder's choice when the Kent State shortstop fielded a ground ball and attempted a toss to second for the force out but her throw was late. Rachel Proehl then added an infield single to load the bases with just one out but Karmen Coffey struck out swinging and MAC Freshman of the Year Paige Berger lined out to shortstop to end the threat.
Kent State came back with a run in the third and added three more in the fifth to end the game.
Along with hits from Arney and Proehl, Lines went 1-for-1 as well. She now has nine hits in her last 14 at-bats.
With the win, Kent State improves to 31-20 overall, while Bowling Green falls to 13-28. The Falcons, seeded eighth, will face fourth-seeded Ohio Thursday morning at 11 a.m. in a MAC Tournament elimination game.
