CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – Bowling Green hit a small bump in the road towards a Mid-American Conference Tournament title on Thursday afternoon after an 8-1 loss to the Chippewas at V.A. Memorial Stadium (Chillicothe, Ohio). The Falcons were held to four hits during the game and surrendered six runs in the top of the second inning, a hole the Falcons could not dig themselves out of.
Bowling Green fell behind by six runs to the Chips early. In the top of the second inning, Central Michigan took advantage of two throwing errors and a unsuccessful double play turn that led to six runs, all unearned, to score. Dale Cornstubble led the inning off with a clean single to right field, but a throwing error by Logan Meisler when the senior went to second on a ground ball toward the first base hole sailed wide of his target and allowed both runners to advance an additional base. The next batter grounded a ball back to Meisler and a second throwing error, this time low to first base, allowed both runners to score on the play and the batter to advance to second. Central pounded out three more runs, two coming from a RBI double to left. With one down, the Falcons could not convert the 6-4-3 double play and an errant throw from second allowed another run to score.
Bowling Green got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Falcons were jumpstarted by Jon Berti double down the right field line. Berti recorded the Falcons' first base hit of the day on a hard hit grounder that toed the first base line, hopping right over the bag and past a diving Nate Theunissen. Turning on the jets, Berti hustled his way into second base for leadoff double. After a passed ball allowed him to advance to third base, Mark Galvin knocked the sophomore in on a single through the middle to get the Falcons on the board, 7-1.
Central Michigan threatened in the innings four through six placing ten runners on base in that time, but could only bring one of those runners home. In the top of the sixth, CMU responded to the Bowling Green run with one of their own to retain the seven run lead they had going into the previous inning. From the third inning on, the Falcons stranded nine CMU runners for the rest of the game.
The Falcon bats mustered only four hits during the game, scoring once. Bryce Morrow went the distance against the Falcons and pitched his second complete game of the season in the CMU win.
Bowling Green (29-22-1) with the loss will play Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. ET to begin day three of the 2010 MAC Tournament. The Falcons will play Ball State University who they defeated 6-4 on Wednesday morning. Should the Falcons beat Ball State for a second time, it would eliminate the Cardinals and advance Bowling Green to the 4:00 p.m. game
