May 28, 2010 | Softball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Zion-Benton Township High School senior Abby Hanson has signed her National Letter of Intent to play softball at Bowling Green State University beginning in the 2010-11 season. Hanson is the daughter of Richard Hanson and Julie Gonka and hails from Winthrop Harbor, Ill.
Hanson, a middle infielder, earned four varsity letters at Zion-Benton and is a two-year team captain, being named to the all-conference team three times. She was team MVP in 2008 and Zion-Benton won a regional championship a year ago and is 28-8 in 2010. She also lettered in basketball and volleyball and was named her school's Athlete of the Year this year. Hanson was also named team MVP in volleyball in both 2008 and 2009 and was named a captain in both basketball and volleyball. She plays for the Northern Ice during the summer.
“Abby is a versatile athlete who we can see helping us in a variety of ways,” Salsburg said. “The first things we noticed about her were her arm and her tremendous work ethic. She is a kid with a ton of raw potential and we look forward to watching her develop in the upcoming years.”
Salsburg did a tremendous coaching job during the 2010 softball season, leading Bowling Green to the MAC Tournament after the Falcons were selected to finish last in the MAC East Division in the coach's preseason poll. Paige Berger was named the league's Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference and the Falcons were one of only two teams to have multiple players on the All-Freshman team.
