May 04, 2010 | Women's Soccer
Members of the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team recently donated their time and effort to a Habitat for Humanity project. The student-athletes helped out at a site in the Toledo area on Saturday (May 1).

A few members of the program, rising sophomore Keely Chandler and senior-to-be Alyssa Zuccaro, shared their impressions of the experience on Saturday morning/afternoon...
Keely Chandler
"On Saturday, we were involved in a community service project, working with a branch of Habitat for Humanity to build a shed in Toledo. The group we worked with builds homes for families in need.
"Our experience with Habitat for Humanity was rewarding, and it was a great time for the entire team. So many families are struggling right now, and to know that we did something to help out one of these families is a great feeling. We spent five hours putting the shed together, and it was exciting to see our final result in the end. It was work that we were all proud of, and doing it as a team made the accomplishment that much greater."
Alyssa Zuccaro
"We all started out by helping make the walls of the shed. As we were cutting the two-by-fours, it soon became clear that Katelyn Turner (aka 'Precious') was the best sawyer! Once we got the four walls made -- after a lot of bent nails and split wood -- we placed the walls on the cement square. We nailed the walls together in the corners, then we each took turns nailing the cement gun into the cement! That was quite amusing. Tim (Sterns, construction manager with Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity) almost lost his hands a couple of times, thanks to Laura (Arnold) and Katie (Stephenson). :)
"Then, we had a lot of other jobs to do. Some people were responsible for attaching the roof to the shed, and others nailed the plywood to the walls. Once these jobs were complete, we had the plywood on the roof, then shingled the roof and we were done. We all helped clean up, of course, and we were off. We felt honored to be able to help the community and better people's lives. It was a joy!"
Saturday's Habitat for Humanity project marked the women's soccer team's second event in the community in the past two weeks. Several team members recently visited the Toledo Children's Hospital to spend time with some of the patients.
