BGSU opens regular season at home vs. Cincinnati Sunday
The visiting University of Windsor struck for three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Friday afternoon/evening (Aug. 20). The scrimmage, the Falcons' first action of the 2010 season, was held at Cochrane Field on the BGSU campus.

The Lancers got goals from Candace Garrod, Kelly Riccardi and Sara Kox in a span of just over 11 minutes to take a three-goal lead in the 39th minute of play.
Garrod's goal came off a giveaway at the 18-yard box. UW's Emilie Glanz stole the ball from a Falcon defender and slid a pass to a wide-open Garrod. Garrod, stationed in the center of the box, hit a one-timer into the left corner of the net at the 27:56 mark.
Another miscommunication in the back end of the field left Riccardi with no one in between her and the open net, and she easily slid the ball over the goal line with 35:51 gone. Then, less than three minutes later, Kox hit a free kick from approximately 40 yards out, and the ball went into the upper-left corner of the net for the Lancers' third goal.
Windsor had an 8-2 advantage in first-half shots, but the Falcons had six shot attempts to just one for UW after halftime. Junior Alyssa Zuccaro had two of the Falcons' three shots on goal for the game, and hit the post with another second-half attempt.
Freshmen Kailey Paszko and Ashley Miller each just missed on second-half scoring chances as well. A third of the way through the second period, junior Katelyn Turner brought the ball along the end line and slid a pass to the onrushing Paszko, but her shot sailed just left of the left post.
Three minutes later, Zuccaro hit a hard shot after she and classmate Megan Amann had teamed up to win the ball in the UW end. But, UW starting goalkeeper Rebecca Singer was able to make a diving stop, getting her fingertips on the ball to deflect it just wide of the post.
Midway through the half, Zuccaro ripped a 20-yard shot off of the left post. The ball caromed off of the post and spun just wide of the right post.
With under three minutes remaining in the match, Miller fired just wide off of a corner kick, for the Falcons' last scoring chance of the match.
Head coach Andy Richards used 22 different players, including all three goalkeepers, in the match. The three 'keepers -- redshirt sophomore Becca Ison, senior Alexa Arsenault and true sophomore Laura Arnold -- each played roughly one-third of the match, and each made one save.
Singer had three stops in 66-plus minutes for the Lancers, and combined with Danielle St. Germain for the shutout. St. Germain did not face a shot on goal.
"We were very, very flat in the first half," said Richards. We were lacking in creativity, and we just weren't sharp. We had a better performance in the second half, and had a few chances to get a goal and make it a closer game.
"Hopefully, we have blown away some of the cobwebs in a game that doesn't count on the overall record. You can bet that, after a good, positive practice on Saturday, we will be ready to go on Sunday."
The Falcons will remain at home to open the regular season on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 22). BGSU will host the University of Cincinnati in a 1:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Field. Admission to that match, and to all of the Falcons' home matches in 2010, is free.
