TEAM LEADERBOARD (WITH PLAYERS) -- TEAM AND PLAYER TOP 20 LISTS
The Bowling Green State University women's golf team, in just four rounds, has already had a season to remember. If the team continues to play at their current torrid pace, it might become a season for the ages.
Just days removed from the best 54 holes in school history, the Falcons traveled to Waynesville, N.C. to play in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate for the second straight year.
The Great Smokies tournament is a two-day, 36-hole event in which the women play one round each day.
Last year, the Falcons had their best round of the season in North Carolina, posting a 311 over the first 18 of the rain-shortened event.
One year later, that round looks like small potatoes.
On Saturday (Sept. 18), the Orange and Brown had the best 18 holes Bowling Green's women's golf program has ever seen.
Every one of the five Falcons in the tournament shot under 80, and the four best scores resulted in a total of 294 -- breaking the old record by four strokes. That old record was achieved in the 2008 Grand Valley State Laker Invitational.
For the record (no pun intended), the 36-hole record is 615, set at the YSU Invitational in 2005.
Individually, freshman Bailey Arnold made a run at Falcon history. She shot 34 over the first 9 holes and had a chance to break Susy Grunden's week-old 18-hole individual record. Even though she fell one shot short of a tie, Arnold's 70 is a freshman record and is good for a second-place tie in BGSU annals.
Arnold enters the second round tied for fifth -- there is a four way tie for first at 69.
Susy Grunden finished just behind Arnold, carding a 72. She is tied for 11th, just three shots behind the leaders.
Junior Paula DiFrancesco had a very solid round, putting together a 75 -- which included a front nine of 36. She's tied for 29th.
Sophomore Amy Ruthenberg is four-for-four this year with rounds under 80; her 77 is tied for 52nd in a field of 124.
In her first action of the season, senior captain Lauren Glew earned a back-nine score of 37 on her way to a 78 for the day. Glew and Grunden are the only Falcons to play in both the 2009 and 2010 Great Smokies tournaments.
Overall, the Falcons are in second place, five shots behind Jacksonville State (289). Bowling Green is five shots ahead of third place Appalachian State and Old Dominion (299). Host Western Carolina is tied for fifth with 300.
The second and final round will commence on Sunday morning. A full recap and complete stats will be available at BGSUFalcons.com after the completion of the tournament.
