Falcons Begin Three-Game Homestand vs. WSU, Lipscomb

The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team, after beginning the season by playing four of the first five matches away from home, now returns to Cochrane Field for four of the next five contests ... the Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols will begin a three-game homestand with a Wednesday (Sept. 22) match against Wright State University ... it will mark BG's third-straight game against a Horizon League foe ... following the WSU match, the Brown and Orange will face Lipscomb University on Sunday morning/afternoon (Sept. 26) ... kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ... the Lipscomb match is the first half of a doubleheader at Cochrane, with the BGSU women's soccer team meeting Kent State at 2:00 p.m.

LAST WEEK
The Falcons split a pair of games on the road against Horizon League foes, winning a 1-0 decision at Detroit Wednesday (Sept. 15) and falling to unbeaten Valparaiso Sunday night (Sept. 19) ... in Motown, junior Max Weston's goal in the 62nd minute gave the Falcons the victory ... Weston scored off of a free kick, with classmate Chris Jurtovski sliding a short pass his way ... another junior, Miguel Rosales, made two saves in goal to earn his second shutout of the campaign ... on Sunday, Valpo scored once in each half to pick up the win ... the Crusaders are 5-0-1 on the season ... VU's Wei Ming Wong headed home a corner kick at the 13:06 mark, and the hosts got a second goal in the 73rd minute of the match ... Rosales made three stops for the Falcons.
I-75 CUP
There will be some hardware on the line when BGSU takes on Wright State on Wednesday ... the Falcons and Raiders will be battling for the I-75 Cup ... head coaches Eric Nichols and Bryan Davis came up with the idea prior to the 2010 season, and the teams will compete for a travelling trophy that will be kept by the winning school until the teams' next meeting.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons will enter the Wright State match with an overall record of 1-2-2, and BGSU is 0-1-0 in Mid-American Conference action ... BG, as mentioned, picked up a 1-0 win at Detroit last week, and the Falcons' two ties came vs. Appalachian State (0-0; Sept. 3) and host Davidson (2-2; Sept. 5) in the Davidson adidas Classic ... for the Brown and Orange, the two losses have come to Akron (the top-ranked team in the country in every poll) and Valparaiso (ranked 33rd in this week's TopDrawerSoccer.com listings), both by 2-0 scores ... junior Max Weston leads the team with five points, having scored two of BGSU's three goals this year to date ... Weston had a goal and an assist vs. DC, and scored the lone goal of the Detroit match ... freshman Zach Schewee had the Falcons' other goal vs. the Wildcats, and has two points ... junior Chris Jurtovski has two points as well, on a team-leading two assists ... junior Miguel Rosales has played all 490 minutes in goal, and has two shutouts, a MAC-leading 26 saves and a goals-against average of 1.10 ... Schewee has also played all 490 minutes in the first five matches, while junior tri-captain Tanner Fink has played 487, Jurtovski 483 and freshman Brandon Silva 478 ... Falcon coach Eric Nichols is in his second season at the BG helm ... Nichols and assistant coach Paul Habrecht welcomed back a total of 14 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's club ... the 2009 Falcons went 3-12-3 overall and posted a MAC mark of 2-3-1, placing fifth in the league standings ... BG scored a total of 21 goals last season, and the departed players combined to score 17 of them ... the Falcons' top-two scorers last season were the graduated Cameron Hepple (10 goals, 21 points) and Jacob Lawrence (five goals, 13 points) ... the Falcons have 12 newcomers on the 2010 team ... junior Byard Ebling is the top returning scorer, having recorded two goals and five points last season ... the only other players on the 2010 roster who scored in '09 are juniors Jurtovski and Weston, who had one goal apiece ... in goal, the lone returning 'keeper is sophomore Dylan Schoettley ... he played in 10 matches a year ago, starting the final seven ... Schoettley had 44 saves and a GAA of 2.27 in 2009 ... Rosales is in his first season at BGSU after transferring from the Univ. of Cincinnati.
FALCON COACH ERIC NICHOLS
Eric Nichols is in his second season at the BGSU helm ... he was hired on Feb. 17, 2009, and is just the fifth head coach in the 46-year history of the program ... Nichols came to BGSU after spending the 2008 season as assistant coach at Davidson College ... he had a successful debut to his BGSU head-coaching career, as the Falcons defeated Marshall, 2-0, in the 2009 regular-season opener, and picked up his first MAC victory at Buffalo ... Nichols has a 4-14-5 record at the helm of the men's soccer Falcons, and is 63-36-6 overall in his sixth season as a collegiate head coach ... prior to his stint at Davidson, Nichols was the head men's soccer coach at Ohio Dominican for four seasons (2004-07) ... under his guidance, the Panthers recorded a 59-22-1 (.728) record, including a final ranking of fourth in 2007 ... that team advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament ... Nichols served as an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan for four seasons ... he played collegiately at Ohio State, and also played five years of professional soccer for several teams, including the Columbus Xoggz and Indiana Blast of the USISL ... Nichols is joined on the BGSU staff by assistant coach Paul Habrecht and director of operations Alma-Lynn Dupont in 2010.
WINNING ON THE ROAD
Last Wednesday's (Sept. 15) win at Detroit enabled the Falcons to match the road win total for all of last season ... after the Valparaiso match, BGSU is now 1-1-1 in road games this year to date ... the Falcons went 1-6-1 in true road contests in 2009.
GETTING RESULTS AWAY FROM HOME
The Falcons have a record of 1-1-2 in all matches away from home (road + neutral-site games) ... last year, BGSU was 1-8-1 in such games.
WESTON WITH THE WINNER
Junior Max Weston scored what proved to be the winning goal at Detroit, marking the first game-winning goal of his collegiate career ... Weston has been involved in the scoring of all three Falcon goals this season, with two goals and an assist ... with the five points, he has topped his scoring total for all of last season ... in 2009, Weston's first season with the Falcons, had had a total of four points on a goal and two assists.
MIGHT WANNA GRAB A PROGRAM ON THE WAY TO YOUR SEAT
Fans who come to Cochrane Field for one of this week's games might want to head to the holder along the fence at the south entrance to the grandstand and grab a match program ... head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons have no fewer than 12 newcomers on the 2010 roster, including 11 freshmen ... three of those newcomers – junior Miguel Rosales and freshmen Zach Schewee and Brandon Silva – have been in the starting lineup for all five matches to date ... an additional four true freshman have made at least one start ... that list includes Ryan Comiskey, Jacob Eganhouse, Matt Griesinger and Ryan Snashall ... Nichols started five newcomers vs. both Akron and Detroit, and no fewer than six in the Valpo match.
ROSALES COLLECTING CLEAN SHEETS
Junior goalkeeper Miguel Rosales and his defenders had two shutouts in the first four matches of the season, with clean sheets against Appalachian State and Detroit ... he is the first Falcon 'keeper to post multiple shutouts since Paul Shoemaker had three in the 2007 season.
FALCONS PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH
The Falcons were picked to finish sixth in the MAC standings in 2010, according to the preseason coaches poll ... the poll is the result of voting by the league's seven head coaches ... Akron, ranked No. 1 in the nation in every poll, was picked to capture the 2010 MAC title ... last year, the Zips captured both the regular-season and tourney titles ... Northern Illinois was predicted to finish second, while Hartwick and Western Michigan were picked to tie for third place ... Hartwick and Florida Atlantic are affiliate members of the MAC in men's soccer.
THE RAIDERS / THE BGSU-WRIGHT STATE SERIES
Wright State will enter the BGSU match with an overall record of 4-2-0 on the season ... the Raiders won the first four matches of the year, including three by shutout, but have dropped the last two contests ... the losses came at Marshall on Wednesday (0-2; Sept. 15) and at home to St. Bonaventure on Sunday (2-3; Sept. 19) ... among WSU's wins was a 2-0 victory against the MAC's Western Michigan in the season opener (Sept. 3) ... the Raiders are 2-1 in road games to date ... Derek Zuniga has team-leading totals of three assists and five points, while Brad Bamberger and Bryce Rockwell-Ashton have two goals apiece ... WSU has scored 10 goals and allowed eight this year to date ... in net, Corey Whisenhunt has seen action in five of the six matches, and has 23 saves, three shutouts and a goals-against average of 0.96 ... Bryan Davis is in his second season as a head coach, both at WSU and overall ... he welcomed back 17 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's club ... the 2009 Raiders went 6-10-1 overall and 2-5-1 in Horizon League play ... the school's athletics web site is wsuraiders.com.
The Falcons trail Wright State, 5-4-2, in the all-time series between the teams ... the Raiders won last year's meeting to snap a two-game BGSU series winning streak ... in last year's contest, WSU's Braden Fleak scored twice in a 2-0 win over the Brown and Orange in Dayton (Oct. 28, 2009) ... in the last meeting in Bowling Green, the Falcons scored twice in the first 30 minutes en route to a 3-0 victory (Oct. 22, 2008) ... Chuko Evwaraye, Thomas McLean and Byard Ebling scored BG's goals that day ... the Falcons and WSU are deadlocked, 2-2-2, in meetings at Cochrane Field.
THE BISONS / THE BGSU-LIPSCOMB SERIES
Lipscomb enters the week with a record of 3-3-0 ... the Bison play at Xavier Friday (Sept. 24) before heading to BGSU two days later ... LU dropped a 4-0 decision to UAB on Sunday (Sept. 19), snapping a three-game winning streak ... those wins had come over Gardner-Webb, Centenary and UNC-Ashville ... the Bisons have played only one road game to date – a loss to SMU in the season opener (1-3; Sept. 4) ... Garret Pettis leads the team with five points, including two goals ... Miguel DaSilva and Garrett McLaughlin also have two goals apiece, while Joey Chiappetta has a team-leading three assists ... Brent McGee has played the bulk of the minutes in goal, and has 24 saves, one shutout and a 2.18 GAA ... THE 89TH MINUTE (A FEW MORE FALCON NOTES)
All three of junior Max Weston's career goals have come on the road, including two in the state of Michigan ... he scored in the Falcons' game against Michigan in Ann Arbor last year, and found the back of the net in this season's matches at Davidson and Detroit • junior Chris Jurtovski had his team-leading second assist of the season, and the second of his career, in Wednesday's win ... Jurtovski had an assist in the DC match, knocking a Weston corner kick to freshman Zach Schewee, and he also assisted on Weston's winner at UDM • Sunday's (Sept. 19) match at Valparaiso was the 750th game in BGSU men's soccer history ... the Falcons have an all-time varsity record of 373-312-65, good for a winning percentage of .541.
