Zuccaro, Arsenault honored by conference office
A pair of Bowling Green State University women's soccer standouts have been named Mid-American Conference players of the week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (Sept. 27). Junior Alyssa Zuccaro was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week, while fifth-year senior Alexa Arsenault was chosen as the MAC's Defensive P-O-W.
Arsenault earns the MAC weekly honor for the first time this season and the fourth time in her BGSU career. She becomes the first player in program history to be named a MAC P-O-W four times. Kristy Coppes and Corbie Yee each earned three such honors in their BGSU careers.
Zuccaro earns the league weekly award for her first time as a Falcon.
Zuccaro, a native of Mentor, Ohio (Mentor H.S.), had seven points as the Falcons got off to a 2-0 start in MAC play for the first time in four years. One game after her first collegiate two-goal contest (on Sept. 19 at Indiana State), she had her first hat trick as the Falcons downed Buffalo, 4-0, on Friday afternoon (Sept. 24). The performance marked the first hat trick by a BGSU player since November of 2004, and it was only the second hat trick in a MAC regular-season game in program history.
Then, on Sunday (Sept. 26), Zuccaro had an assist on freshman Tracy Togba's game-winning goal against Kent State. That proved to be the lone goal in the Falcons' 1-0 win over the Golden Flashes.
In addition to the three goals and the assist, Zuccaro hit the crossbar with a header vs. UB, and hit the post with a shot against KSU. She has scored 12 points over the last three games, all wins.
'Z' has a team-leading 15 points this season to date, including six goals. The total of six goals is twice as many as any BGSU player scored during all of last season. She now ranks 10th in scoring in BGSU history, with 33 career points. Zuccaro is eighth in BG annals with a total of 13 career goals scored.
Arsenault, who hails from Richmond Hill, Ontario (St. Theresa of Lisieux), had a total of 12 saves and a goals-against average of 0.00 on the weekend. She had three saves in the win over Buffalo, then made a season-high total of nine stops vs. Kent State.
That Sunday save total included several stellar saves while the match was still tied. Perhaps her best save came in the first half, when she made a diving stop of a header by Jessacca Gironda from close range.
Sunday's complete-match shutout was her 22nd as a Falcon, extending her own career record in that category. With 27 career victories, Arsenault ranks third on that BGSU list.
The Falcons of head coach Andy Richards are 4-6-1 overall and 2-0-0 in MAC action, and BG has won three consecutive games. This week, the Brown and Orange will meet two perennial MAC powers, heading to Eastern Michigan for a Friday (Oct. 1) game, before returning home to face defending conference champion Central Michigan on Sunday (Oct. 3). Friday's match begins at 4:00 p.m. in Ypsilanti, while Sunday's contest is set for a 1:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Field.
