BGSU opens the home & MAC schedules vs. the Zips Saturday
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team opens the home portion of the 2010 regular season with a tough test, to say the very least ... the Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols will host the number-one team in the country, the University of Akron, this weekend ... the Falcons and Zips will meet on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 11), with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field ... in addition to being the home opener, Saturday's game is also the Mid-American Conference opener for the Brown and Orange ... the UA match is BGSU's only home game in the first five contests of the season.

The Falcons opened the season with a pair of ties at the Davidson adidas Classic in Davidson, N.C. ... on Friday (Sept. 3), BGSU battled Appalachian State to a scoreless draw in double overtime ... junior Miguel Rosales made four saves in goal to earn the clean sheet in his first regular-season match as a Falcon ... on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 5), the Brown and Orange twice rallied from one-goal deficits for a 2-2 tie with host Davidson ... junior Max Weston had a goal and an assist, while freshman Zach Schewee scored his first collegiate goal in the match ... Rosales made six saves in his complete-match effort.

Three Falcon newcomers were named to the all-tournament team at the Davidson adidas Classic ... junior Miguel Rosales and freshmen Zach Schewee and Brandon Silva earned spots on the all-tourney team.

The Falcons will enter the Akron match with an overall record of 0-0-2 ... Saturday's contest will be the Mid-American Conference opener for both BGSU and the Zips ... BGSU's two ties came vs. Appalachian State (0-0; Sept. 3) and host Davidson (2-2; Sept. 5) in the Davidson adidas Classic ... junior Max Weston leads the team with three points, with a goal and an assist vs. DC ... freshman Zach Schewee had the Falcons' other goal vs. the Wildcats, and has two points ... junior Miguel Rosales has played all 220 minutes in goal, and has one shutout, 10 saves and a goals-against average of 0.82 ... Schewee has also played all 220 minutes in the first two matches, as has junior tri-captain Tanner Fink ... Falcon coach Eric Nichols is in his second season at the BG helm ... Fans who come to Cochrane Field for Saturday's Akron match might want to grab one of those handy game programs, located in the holder at the south entrance to the grandstand ... head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons have no fewer than 12 newcomers on the 2010 roster, including 11 freshmen ... three of those newcomers – junior Miguel Rosales and freshmen Zach Schewee and Brandon Silva – were in the starting lineup for both matches at Davidson over the weekend ... of the six players who saw action off the bench, five of them are true freshmen ... that list includes Ryan Comiskey, Jacob Eganhouse, Sam Galloway, Matt Griesinger and Ryan Snashall.
FAMILIAR FACES
Eric Nichols began the 2010 season by coaching against a former school ... Nichols came to BGSU after spending the 2008 campaign as an assistant coach at Davidson under current Wildcat coach Matt Spear ... and, freshman Brandon Silva will face his former school this weekend ... Silva enrolled at BGSU in the spring of 2010 after transferring from the University of Akron ... he was on the Zips' roster in 2009, but did not see match action ... Silva has started each of the Falcons' first two matches this fall.
FALCON COACH ERIC NICHOLS
Eric Nichols is in his second season at the BGSU helm ... he was hired on Feb. 17, 2009, and is just the fifth head coach in the 46-year history of the program ... Nichols came to BGSU after spending the 2008 season as assistant coach at Davidson College ... he had a successful debut to his BGSU head-coaching career, as the Falcons defeated Marshall, 2-0, in the 2009 regular-season opener, and picked up his first MAC victory at Buffalo ... Nichols has a 3-12-5 record at the helm of the men's soccer Falcons, and is 62-34-6 overall in his sixth season as a collegiate head coach ... prior to his stint at Davidson, Nichols was the head men's soccer coach at Ohio Dominican for four seasons (2004-07) ... under his guidance, the Panthers recorded a 59-22-1 (.728) record, including a final ranking of fourth in 2007 ... that team advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament ... Nichols served as an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan for four seasons ... he played collegiately at Ohio State, and also played five years of professional soccer for several teams, including the Columbus Xoggz and Indiana Blast of the USISL ... Nichols is joined on the BGSU staff by assistant coach Paul Habrecht and director of operations Alma-Lynn Dupont in 2010.
FALCONS PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH
The Falcons have been picked to finish sixth in the MAC standings in 2010, according to the preseason coaches poll, released by the conference office on Aug. 26 ... the poll is the result of voting by the league's seven head coaches ... Akron, ranked No. 1 in the nation in every poll, was picked to capture the 2010 MAC title ... last year, the Zips captured both the regular-season and tourney titles ... Northern Illinois was predicted to finish second, while Hartwick and Western Michigan were picked to tie for third place ... Hartwick and Florida Atlantic are affiliate members of the MAC in men's soccer.
THE ZIPS / THE BGSU-AKRON SERIES
Akron is 2-0-0 on the young season, and the Zips are the number-one team in the country in every poll ... UA opened the season with a pair of road wins over teams ranked in the top-five in the nation, posting a 3-0 victory at North Carolina Friday night; Sept. 3) and a 2-0 triumph against Wake Forest on Sunday (Sept. 5) ... Akron matched an NCAA record with 23 consecutive wins in 2009, advancing all the way to the national championship game ... three players – senior Anthony Ampaipitakwong and juniors Darlington Nagbe and Kofi Sarkodie were named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List for 2010 ... Nagbe leads the team in scoring, with two goals and five points ... he scored in each of the two games last weekend ... Sarkodie has a team-high two assists ... Nagbe was named the MAC Player of the Week on Tuesday (Sept. 7), while Sarkodie was named National P-O-W by College Soccer News ... sophomore goalkeeper David Meves has six saves, two shutouts and a goals-against average of 0.00 ... Meves was named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week ... head coach Caleb Porter, the 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year, welcomed back 11 letterwinners, including eight starters, from a year ago ... the Zips went 23-1-1 overall and 6-0-0 in the MAC, advancing all the way to the national championship match ... Porter is 70-12-8 in his fifth season as a collegiate head coach, all in Akron ... the school's athletics web site is www.GoZips.com.
The Falcons trail Akron, 38-8-3, in the all-time series between the teams ... BGSU has a 3-16-2 home record against the Zips, and UA comes to Northwest Ohio riding a 10-game series win streak ... the Falcons' last victory over the Zips came in 2002, a 1-0 triumph at Cochrane Field (Oct. 27, 2002) ... last season in Akron, the hosts picked up a 6-0 victory over the Falcons (Sept. 26, 2009) ... two years ago, in the most recent meeting at Cochrane (Oct. 11, 2008), UA got an early goal and a late insurance marker to post a 2-0 victory over the Brown and Orange ... a list of the most recent meetings is on page 5 of the PDF version of this release.
THE 89TH MINUTE (A FEW MORE FALCON NOTES)
Last Friday (Sept. 3) marked the first time in BGSU history that both the men's and women's soccer teams played to scoreless ties on the same day ... the Falcon men drew with Appalachian State, while the BG women played to a 0-0 deadlock against Niagara in Western New York • junior Max Weston's three-point match against Davidson was the first of his career ... with those three points, Weston has nearly matched his scoring total for all of last season ... Weston had four points on a goal and two assists in 2009 • BGSU is undefeated after two matches for the first time since 2007 and only the third time in the last decade.
