AKRON, Ohio -- A wet course and a chilly wind met the Bowling Green State University women's golf team on Monday (Oct. 17) as they completed the first round of the fourth annual Zippy Invitational, held at the Rosemont Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
The Falcons registered an 18-hole total of 332 on a course that played wet after several days of rain in the Akron area. Despite sunny skies, temperatures remained in the 50s as winds howled to as much as 30 miles per hour. The team is one shot behind Ohio University, who sits in third place at 331. They lead Walsh by five strokes and Cleveland State by 17.
Tournament host Akron leads the field by 16 strokes after shooting 301. Eastern Kentucky is in second place with a 14-shot cushion.
The 2011 Falcon freshman class, Shelby Wilson and Patricia Holt are tied for tenth place to lead the Bowling Green effort. Each carded an 81 on Monday and are four shots outside of the top five. The pair trail the co-leaders by eight.
Bailey Arnold, team leader in scoring average, is third among Falcon players and tied for 18th overall after shooting an 84. Paula DiFrancesco and Amy Ruthenberg are each in the top 25 after scoring 86 and 87, respectively, on Monday.
Kelsey Benson (93) and Jen Blanchard (99) are competing as individuals and are playing in their second tournament of the year.
The second (and final) round begins on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. with a shotgun start. Complete results and a final recap will be available on BGSUFalcons.com on Tuesday evening.
