BGSU players combine to go 4-2 in Thursday action

Bowling Green State University tennis junior Maddy Eccleston is one win away from reaching the main draw at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Eccleston won a pair of matches on Thursday (Oct. 20) at the event, which is being held on the campus of The Ohio State University.

Three Falcons are competing in the 48-woman singles qualifying draw. Junior Mary Hill and sophomore Emily Reuland each won an opening-round match on Thursday before falling in the second round.

FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE: Reuland was originally reported as winning both of her Thursday matches. The brackets above reflect the incorrect result, and will be corrected at the end of Friday's play.

Eccleston posted a pair of dominant wins in Thursday's action, while Reuland split a pair of three-set matches.

Eccleston lost only one game in her first-round win over IPFW's Frederique Sunstrum, recording a 6-1, 6-0 decision. Then, the junior co-captain downed Western Michigan's Maggie Remynse, 6-3, 6-0, in the second round. She will face Olga Shkundina of Akron on Friday morning, with the winner earning one of the eight qualifying spots for the singles main draw.

Both of Reuland's matches came against Mid-American Conference foes. She lost her opening set to Eastern Michigan's Marcela Rivero, but rallied to pick up 7-5 wins in each of the next two sets. Then, the BG sophomore battled Kelsey Anonsen of Toledo to a third set before succumbing.

Hill opened the day with a straight-sets win over Youngstown State's Margarita Sadovnikova, winning both sets by 6-4 scores. But, her run came to an end with a loss to Julia Jamieson of Illinois in the second round. Hill will meet Cleveland State's Alex Power in the consolation bracket on Friday.

Back-draw play begins at 8:00 a.m. on Friday (Oct. 21). There is a consolation draw for both the players who lost in the round of 48 and those who fell in the round of 32. Both brackets will be played to completion.

Doubles play begins on Friday, with a total of 46 teams competing. BGSU has two teams in the doubles draw. Hill and Reuland will face Toledo's Anonsen/Pitt team, with the winners moving on to play Northwestern's fourth-seeded duo of Chernyakova and Livadaru.

Eccleston and sophomore Nikki Chiricosta will battle the UIC tandem of Kovaleva/Simonetti in Friday's opening round, with the winning team taking on Ohio State's Cecil/Dieters duo in second-round play.

Chiricosta was the lone Falcon to be placed into the singles main draw. She will face Patricia Fargas of DePaul on Saturday morning (Oct. 22). The winner will meet Jennifer Kellner of Notre Dame.
