Four Falcons competing in Columbus

Four members of the Bowling Green State University tennis team were in action Friday (Oct. 21), competing at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Juniors Maddy Eccleston and Mary Hill and sophomores Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland are representing the Falcons in the event, hosted by The Ohio State University.

Eccleston fell just one win shy of advancing through the singles qualifying draw into the main draw. Eight of the 48 competitors in the qualifying draw moved on, with Akron's Olga Shkundina ending Eccleston's bid to do so. After winning a pair of singles matches on Thursday, Eccleston fell to her UA foe by identical 6-2 scores on Friday.

Hill split a pair of sets in a singles consolation match against Cleveland State's Alex Power, before Power posted a 10-5 win in the super-tiebreaker.

In doubles play, the Hill/Reuland team split a pair of matches vs. Mid-American Conference foes, falling to Toledo's Anonsen/Pitt duo by an 8-4 score before rallying for an 8-5 win over an Eastern Michigan team. Chiricosta and Eccleston dropped a pair of narrow matches, losing to teams from UIC (8-4) and Youngstown State (9-7).

Chiricosta was the lone Falcon to be placed into the singles main draw. She will face Patricia Fargas of DePaul on Saturday morning (Oct. 22). The winner will meet Jennifer Kellner of Notre Dame.
