The Falcons recently wrapped up their fall practice schedule by partaking in their annual Brown and Orange World Series. Coached by assistant Spencer Schmitz, the Brown team was able to come back from two games down to win the series via the tiebreaker.
In game one, Falcon ace Cody Apthorpe toed the rubber for the Orange, going 4.2 innings, allowing one run and striking out three. He opposed Patrick Martin, who left the game trailing 1-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Jeremy Shay hit a two-run home run to break a 1-1 tie, and that proved to be the clinching hit, as the Orange defeated the Brown 3-2. Nick Bruns was credited with the win, while freshman Jason Link was tagged with the loss.
Game two took place on a windy Friday afternoon, and the Orange squad continued to get the timely hit, scoring five runs over the final three innings to erase a 1-0 deficit. Jeremy Shay once again hit a two-run home run, with Taylor Rhoades and Brian Bien coming up with big hits in the fifth. Jesse Rait led the Brown team with a 3-3 day at the plate. Freshman Jake Overbeck had a strong outing in relief of freshman Andrew Lacinak.
In game three, the Brown team began their comeback taking advantage of an Orange pitching staff that struggled to throw strikes, to win a 13-9 decision. The Brown team was led offensively by Andrew Kubuski who was 4-4 with 3 RBIs. Patrick Martin threw a strong three innings, to pick up the win. The Orange team was led offensively by Logan Walker and Taylor Rhoades who each had two hit days.
Game four saw the Brown team win in a rain shortened 2-0 victory over the Orange Team. Both Mike Frank of the Brown team, and Cody Apthorpe of the Orange, pitched well. The Brown team managed to scrap out runs on RBI singles by Brandon Howard and T.J. Losby.
With games three and four being shortened, and the final day of fall practice being washed out by rain, the series was tied at two games apiece. The tiebreaker came down to run differential, with the Brown squad taking home the Brown and Orange World Series championship.
Junior Matt Pitzulo and Sophomore Jeremy Shay were named the position player MVPs of the fall, with Juniors Cody Apthorpe and Mike Frank being named the pitching MVPs. The Freshman of the Fall Awards went to infielder Brian Bien, and outfielder Jesse Rait.
