BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University football team rode a stout defense and timely offense to a 13-10 upset of the Temple Owls at Doyt L. Perry Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 22). The win gives the Falcons a 2-2 Mid-American Conference record and 2-0 in the Eastern Division.
The Falcons held Temple without a point through halftime and out of the end zone until the fourth quarter. After the Owls finally pulled ahead 10-6 and an exchange of punts, the Falcons drove 56 yards in five plays for the winning score.
That score came on a textbook fade pass from Matt Schilz to Shaun Joplin. The 24-yard throw came on a fourth-and-nine.
Temple was held under their season averages in both rushing and passing, while the Falcons surpassed what Temple had allowed per game prior to visiting Bowling Green.
The Falcons allowed just 218 rushing yards for the game. While Temple runners Bernard Pierce and Matt Brown had a few longer runs, the BGSU defense held the pair in check when big plays were necessary.
Late in the game, when the Owls needed to pass, the Falcon defense also stopped that. Temple completed only seven passes for 66 yards, and Chester Stewart was sacked four times. The final sack, by Paul Swan, ended Temple's final drive and sealed the BGSU victory. Chris Jones earned the other three.
Offensively, the Falcons struggled at times to move the ball, but when the team needed yards, Schilz and company moved the ball.
With a stalemate brewing late in the first quarter, the Falcons drove 83 yards in nine plays. Anthon Samuel provided a 48-yard run and Stephen Stein capped the drive with a 33-yard field goal.
After Temple tied the game in the third quarter, the Falcons reeled off a 13-play, 67 yard drive that took nearly six minutes off the game clock. Stein kicked a 29-yard field goal to tie the game at six with 13:32 to play.
Temple responded with their only touchdown drive of the game and, when the Falcons went three-and-out in under a minute, it appeared that BGSU was teetering on the edge.
A defensive stand of their own stopped the possible momentum shift, and that's when the Falcons offense stepped up one last time. Schilz started the drive with a 31-yard pass to Eugene Cooper. Three plays later, Schilz threw to Joplin for the game-winning touchdown.
After the touchdown, Temple could not manage so much as a first down on any of their final three drives as the Falcons completed their masterful defensive effort.
The Falcons earned 318 yards as a team. Schilz was 20-for-34 for 204 yards while the team ran for 114. Samuel led that effort with 112 yards. Kamar Jorden led receivers with five catches for 52 yards. Cooper had four for 50, while Joplin contributed two for 37.
Bowling Green, like Temple, had no turnovers. The Falcons also committed a minimum of penalties, with only two for 20 yards. Temple's penalties were often decisive and totaled 12 for 97 yards.
The Falcons improve to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the MAC. The team is one loss behind Miami, but the Falcons have already defeated the Redhawks this season. Temple is now 5-3 and 3-2 in the MAC.
BGSU's next game is on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m. in Kent, Ohio against the Golden Flashes of Kent State.
