
Falcons Blow Past Kent State For 18th Win

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team greatly improved its chances of qualifying for the Mid-American Conference Tournament by sweeping past Kent State Friday night 25-22, 25-15, 25-21.
With the win, the Falcons improved to 18-7 on the year and 5-6 in conference play. Currently sitting in seventh place in the MAC standings, Bowling Green is now two wins clear of any of the bottom five teams. Eight teams will advance to the MAC Tournament Nov. 18-20 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Bowling Green hit .250 for the match and almost got a triple-double from freshman Erica Fullenkamp. She ended with seven kills, 13 assists and 10 digs. Danielle Tonyan led the Falcons with 11 kills and Kauth and Fullenkamp had seven each while both hit at least .500 for the match.
The Falcons dominated in digs, holding a 50-38 advantage behind 18 from libero Ashley Dunn. The team also had 11 more kills than Kent State with 42.
Kent State only led for a few short stints throughout the match and the Falcons took control in each set. The Golden Flashes' best chance came in the first as they built a 12-8 lead. But the Falcons used an 8-1 run on three Tonyan kills to build a 16-13 lead. The Falcons never trailed again, putting the set away on a Fullenkamp kill.
Bowling Green dominated both the second and third sets early, scoring the first seven points of the second set and building a quick 10-4 lead in the third. Kent State really never challenged after that in either frame.
Kent State falls to 8-17 on the year and 1-10 in MAC play. Bowling Green, which holds sole possession of second place in the MAC East, hosts East leader Ohio Saturday at 3 p.m. Ohio holds a 2 ½ game lead over the Falcons for the top spot in the standings.
Saturday's match will also be Denise Van De Walle Recognition Day as the Falcons honor the 29-year head coach who will retire at the conclusion of the season.
