Bowling Green, Ohio – During an afternoon on which Bowling Green volleyball coach Denise Van De Walle was honored for her 29-year coaching career, the BGSU volleyball team battled Mid-American Conference East Division leader Ohio through five sets before finally succumbing 25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11. Van De Walle will retire at the conclusion of the 2011 season.
Ohio swept the Falcons the first time the two teams played earlier this year, but this contest was much more competitive. Bowling Green had seven more kills than Ohio and four more digs, but the Bobcats escaped with the win on the strength of 10.5 blocks and nine service aces.
Danielle Tonyan tied her career-high with 23 kills, including nine during a critical fourth-set victory. Paige Penrod broke out of a slump with 16 kills and Emily Kauth finished with 10. Erica Fullenkamp capped off a strong weekend with five kills, 21 assists and 13 digs.
After Ohio controlled the opening set, Bowling Green bounced back in the second. There were 13 ties and five lead changes during the stanza and final tie came at 20-20. With the set knotted up, Ohio had a service error and an attack error. After a Bobcats timeout, Penrod served up an ace for a 23-20 lead. Still trailing 24-21, Ohio scored two consecutive points but Tonyan evened the match up with a kill for the 25-23 win.
Ohio seemed to regain momentum in the third set, jumping out to an 8-1 lead and rolling to the 25-19 victory, but the Falcons again battled back in the fourth set. Bowling Green had 21 kills on its 25 points in the set, including 15 combined from Tonyan and Penrod. Leading 21-20, the Falcons got kills from Fullenkamp and Tonyan, followed by an Ohio attack error. At 24-21, Tonyan had her ninth kill of the set to send the match to a deciding fifth set.
Bowling Green led only once in the final set, getting a Penrod kill on the first point. The set was tied at 4-4 and Ohio led by just two at 11-9 but the Falcons came up on the short end of a few close calls down the stretch. An Ohio kill finished the match at 15-11.
With the win, Ohio improves to 16-9 overall and 8-3 in MAC play. Bowling Green falls to 18-8 and 5-7. The Falcons will head to the road for the next weekend, facing Buffalo Friday at 7 p.m. and Akron Saturday at 5 p.m.
