Buffalo, N.Y. – Ashley Dunn had 20 digs but the Bowling Green State University volleyball team lost to Buffalo in three sets 25-20, 25-23, 25-15 Friday evening.
Despite the loss, BGSU remains one game in front of Buffalo in the Mid-American Conference East Division standings at 5-8 in conference play. Buffalo is 4-9 and looking to make a late push for a MAC Tournament spot. The victory was the 300th of Bulls head coach Todd Kress' career.
Bowling Green hit just .026 for the match as Buffalo recorded 10.0 blocks. Paige Penrod led the Falcons with eight kills while Danielle Tonyan had five. That total snapped Tonyan's stretch of 11 consecutive matches with double-digit kills. Kari Galen had five blocks to lead BGSU's defensive effort at the net.
After dropping a fairly close opening set, the Falcons led for much of the second in an attempt to even the match. Tied at 20-20, Penrod had kills on two of the next three points to put Bowling Green on top 22-21. Buffalo's Dana Musil answered with back-to-back kills to put the Bulls on top. After a Bowling Green timeout, Tonyan had a kill to tie the score at 23-23. Buffalo, however, picked up a kill and an attack error for the 25-23 win.
The third set was never close as Buffalo jumped out to a 9-3 lead and rolled to the 25-15 win.
Bowling Green falls to 18-9 on the season and plays a critical match Saturday at Akron beginning at 5 p.m. The Falcons sit in seventh place in the MAC standings and lead Miami, Buffalo, and Toledo by just one game in the race for the final two postseason spots.
