I-75 CUP
There will be some hardware on the line when BGSU takes on Wright State on Tuesday. For the second year in a row, the Falcons and Raiders will be battling for the I-75 Cup. Head coaches Eric Nichols and Bryan Davis came up with the idea prior to the 2010 season, and the teams now compete for a travelling trophy that is kept by the winning school until the teams' next meeting. Last season, in the first match since the trophy was created, the Falcons picked up a 3-0 win at Cochrane Field.
THE FALCONS AND THE MAC RACE
With one week left in the regular season, the Falcons still have a chance to qualify for the MAC Tournament. Four teams make the tourney, and three schools – Akron, Buffalo and Northern Illinois – have clinched berths. Nationally-ranked UA has clinched the regular-season title, and will host the league tournament semifinals (Nov. 11) and championship (Nov. 13).
The Falcons currently are in sixth place in the seven-team league. Three schools, including BGSU, still are alive in the race for the fourth and final tournament spot. Only Florida Atlantic has been eliminated from tourney contention. Hartwick currently sits in fourth place, and the Hawks control their own destiny. Both HC and Western Michigan have five points (teams earn three points for a win and one for a tie), but HC plays two matches this week, heading to UB before hosting NIU. WMU has only one league match remaining.
To make the tourney, both BGSU and Western Michigan need a win and some help. The Falcons and Broncos square off on Saturday in Kalamazoo. For BG to make the tournament, the Falcons need to defeat Western and the Falcons need Hartwick to lose both matches – or to lose one match and tie the other – this week.
The highest point total BGSU could accumulate is seven. One Hartwick win would give the Hawks eight points, putting the Hawks out of BG's reach in the standings. A BG win, coupled with a pair of Hartwick ties, would leave the teams tied with seven points apiece. In such a case, however, HC would win the tiebreaker.
The first tiebreaker is head-to-head results, and the teams played to a draw in their regular-season meeting. The second tiebreaker is results against the rest of the league, starting at the top. Both teams lost to Akron, but for the tie in the standings to occur, HC would have had to draw with both UB or NIU, the teams that would finish second and third under this scenario. BG lost to both the Bulls and the Huskies.

LAST TIME(S) OUT
The Falcons suffered a pair of 3-0 losses in conference play last week. On Wednesday (Oct. 26), BGSU played seventh-ranked Akron to a scoreless draw in the opening half, but the Zips scored three second-half goals en route to the win. Fifth-year senior Miguel Rosales made six stops for the Falcons.
On Saturday (Oct. 29), visiting Northern Illinois took a 1-0 halftime lead and broke the game open with a pair of second-half markers. Sophomore Michael Wiest made four saves on the night.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons enter the week with an overall record of 7-6-3, and BGSU is 1-3-1 in MAC play. BG finished the home schedule with a 4-2-1 record, and the Falcons are 2-4-2 on the road and 1-0-0 in neutral-site matches.
After opening the campaign with a 2-0 victory over then ninth-ranked Michigan (Aug. 26), BG picked up a 3-0 win over IPFW (Aug. 31) before suffering a 2-1 loss to Cleveland State (Sept. 3). All three of those matches came at Cochrane Field.
BG then went on the road for five consecutive matches, going 3-1-1. The Falcons played in back-to-back tournaments, heading to Western Pennsylvania and posting 1-0 wins over Duquesne in double OT (Sept. 9) and host Pittsburgh in regulation (Sept. 11). The following weekend, BGSU lost to Belmont (3-2; Sept. 16) and tied Lipscomb (1-1; Sept. 18) at the Hyatt Place Brentwood Invitational, but the Falcons bounced back with a dominant 4-1 win over Detroit (Sept. 21).
BG returned home and picked up shutout wins vs. IUPUI (1-0, Sept. 30) and Florida Atlantic (3-0, Oct. 2). But, the Falcons then returned to the road and fell victim to two shutouts, at Ohio State (1-0 in OT, Oct. 5) and Buffalo (5-0, Oct. 9).
The Brown and Orange then battled to a pair of double-overtime draws, including a road match at Michigan State (0-0, Oct. 19) and a home game vs. Hartwick (1-1, Oct. 22), before suffering two 3-0 setbacks last week, against Akron and Northern Illinois. In the MAC, the Falcons went 1-1-1 at Cochrane and are currently 0-2-0 away from home.
Freshman Danny Baraldi leads the Falcons in scoring, with 14 points. The Canton, Ohio, native has eight assists to lead the Brown and Orange in that category, and Baraldi is one of six Falcons with at least two goals on the year.
Junior Rodcliff Hall is second on the team with nine points, while senior Colin Armstrong has eight. Redshirt sophomore Brandon Silva and redshirt junior Zach Lemke are tied for fourth on the Falcons with seven points apiece.
Armstrong and Hall are tied for the team goal-scoring lead, with four each, while Lemke is second on the Falcons with three assists.
Baraldi and Silva each have three goals this season to date. Sophomore Ryan Comiskey has six points on the year, as he and Lemke have two goals apiece. Comiskey, senior Tanner Fink and sophomore Ryan Snashall each have two assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Wiest has started 12 matches this season – including the first four contests of the year as well as eight of the last nine games – while redshirt senior Miguel Rosales has made six appearances, including four starts. Rosales started last week's Akron contest, while Wiest was in goal for the NIU match.
Wiest has had six shutouts this fall, and has 39 saves, a save percentage of .780 and a goals-against average of 1.00. He posted shutouts in each of his first two collegiate starts, vs. ninth-ranked Michigan and IPFW, and also kept clean sheets vs. Duquesne, IUPUI, FAU and Michigan State.
Rosales has 25 saves, one shutout and a GAA of 1.54 to date. He blanked Pittsburgh on the road, the seventh shutout of his BGSU career, and made a season-high eight saves in over 80 minutes of relief work at Ohio State. Rosales was an All-Mid-American Conference Second-Team selection a year ago.
Third-year coach Eric Nichols and his staff, assistants Charlie Edwards and Paul Habrecht, welcomed back a total of 17 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's club. The 2010 Falcons finished the season with an overall record of 6-9-3 and a MAC ledger of 3-3-0. BGSU, after being picked to place sixth in the league in the 2010 preseason coaches poll, tied for third in the final regular-season standings and returned to the conference tournament after a one-year absence. BGSU doubled the overall win total from the previous fall (3-12-3).
BGSU's returning players combined for seven of the team's 15 goals and nine of the Falcons' 15 assists a year ago. The top-returning scorers from last season were junior Joey D'Agostino and Comiskey, each of whom had four points on two goals.
Freshman Alex Bechtol has played all 1516-plus minutes this season, while soph Zach Schewee has played 1501. Lemke and Baraldi have been on the pitch for 1442 and 1419 minutes, respectively, this year to date, while Silva has played 1303. Fink had played every minute this season until being injured late in the Michigan State match. He played the remainder of that game, but has missed the last three matches due to the injury.
A total of four Falcons have started all 16 games to date. That list includes Baraldi, Bechtol, Lemke and Schewee. Hall and Silva have made 15 starts apiece.
THE OPPONENTS
Wright State enters Tuesday's match with an overall record of 8-6-2, and the Raiders are 4-2-1 in Horizon League play. After failing to win a single conference match in 2010, WSU is tied for second on the league in '11. The Raiders were winless in the first four October matches, but ended the month with wins in two of the last three games, including Saturday's (Oct. 29) 2-1 home win over Green Bay. WSU is 4-2-0 in home matches this season to date. Bryce Rockwell-Ashton leads the Raiders with 14 points this fall. He has a team-high four assists, and is tied for the goal-scoring lead, with five. Justin Laird also has five goals, and has 11 total points. Craig Feehan has played every minute of every match in goal, and has 59 saves, three shutouts and a goals-against average of 1.09. Bryan Davis is in his third season as head coach of the Raiders, and has helped the team to double last year's overall win total. The 2010 Raiders went 4-12-1 overall, and finished Horizon League play with a record of 0-7-1. The school's athletics web site is www.WSURaiders.com.
Western Michigan is 5-11-2 overall, and the Broncos will bring a 1-2-2 MAC mark into Saturday match vs. BGSU. Like the Falcons, the Broncos have a chance to make the MAC Tournament, but need to win Saturday's match and have Hartwick stumble in this week's matches. The Broncos are looking to snap a four-game winless streak. Western had lost three consecutive matches before battling HC to a wild 4-4 tie on the road Saturday (Oct. 29). The Broncos are 3-4-0 at home, 2-6-2 on the road and 0-1-0 in neutral-site games this season. Shane Lyons is one of three players in double digits in scoring, with a team-leading 13 points. Lyons has a team-high six goals, while Kai Mendes, Jason Grant and Pat Schiffer all have three. Mendes and Grant have 12 and 10 points, respectively. In goal, Matt Murrell and Sean Lewis each have made multiple starts this fall. Murrell has started 12 of the 18 matches, and has three shutouts, 43 saves and a 1.46 GAA. Lewis, who has made six starts, has 27 stops and a GAA of 2.61. Head coach Stu Riddle, in his third season in Kalamazoo, led the Broncos to an overall record of 10-8-2 and a MAC ledger of 4-2-0 a year ago. The school's athletics web site is www.WMUBroncos.com.
THE SERIES
The Falcons and Wright State are tied, 5-5-2, in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU captured last year's meeting. Last fall, the Falcons scored in the third minute of the match en route to a 3-0 win at Cochrane Field (Sept. 22, 2010). Colin Armstrong scored the Falcons' second goal of that match, while Miguel Rosales earned the shutout. In the teams' last meeting in Dayton, the host Raiders picked up a 2-0 win over the Brown and Orange (Oct. 28, 2009). BGSU is 3-2-2 in home meetings and 2-3-0 in road games vs. the Raiders. The Falcons' last road win in the series came four years ago, a 2-0 victory (Sept. 23, 2007). Each of the last five series meetings have been decided by at least two goals.

The teams met again in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament in Akron, and WMU scored on a free kick in the 54th minute for a 1-0 win (Nov. 12, 2010). The teams have not met in Kalamazoo in three years, since a 3-0 Bronco victory on Oct. 15, 2008. BGSU's last series win was a 4-1 verdict at Cochrane Field four years ago (Oct. 27, 2007). BGSU went 24-3-2 vs. Western in the first 29 series meetings, but the Broncos are 10-2-1 vs. the Falcons over the last decade. BGSU has records of 14-4-2 at home, 11-8-1 on the road and 1-1-0 in neutral-site meetings with the Broncos.

MOST WINS SINCE 2003
The Falcons have won seven matches for the first time since the 2003 season. That '03 club went 8-9-5 overall and advanced to the championship match of the MAC Tournament in Mel Mahler's final season as BGSU coach.
75 WINS FOR NICHOLS
The Falcons' 3-0 win over Florida Atlantic on Oct. 2 was the 75th head-coaching victory for Eric Nichols. Nichols, who had a record of 59-22-1 in his four seasons at Ohio Dominican (2004-07), has an overall winning percentage of .597 as a collegiate head coach.
HOME WINS
Before the month of August came to an end, the Falcons had matched the home win total for all of last season. Despite Saturday's (Oct. 29) loss to Northern Illinois, BGSU finished with a record of 4-2-1 at home this year, having doubled the 2010 win total at Cochrane Field. The Brown and Orange went 2-4 at home a year ago, and the Falcons had not won as many as four home matches since the 2007 team had a 4-3-2 mark at Cochrane. The 2008 team went 2-4-0 at home, while the '09 Falcons were 2-4-2.
BIG CROWDS AT COCHRANE FIELD
The 2011 season marks the first time in at least 15 years that the Falcons played before three crowds in excess of 500 at Cochrane Field. BG's season-opening win over Michigan came before a crowd of 2,133, more than triple the previous largest gathering at Cochrane Field in the last decade and a half. Attendance records are incomplete prior to 1997, but to follow are the top attendance figures at Cochrane during that time.

FALCON COACH ERIC NICHOLS
BGSU coach Eric Nichols is in his third season at the Falcon helm. Nichols, who was hired on Feb. 17, 2009, is just the fifth head coach in the history of the program, now in its 47th season. He enters Tuesday's Wright State match with a record of 16-27-9 with the Falcons and a 75-49-10 mark in his seventh season as a collegiate head coach. Nichols is 6-9-2 all-time in MAC matches heading into Saturday's Western Michigan contest.
Nichols guided the 2010 team to a 6-9-3 overall mark and a MAC ledger of 3-3-0. BGSU, after being picked to place sixth in the league in the preseason coaches poll, tied for third in the final regular-season standings and participated in the semifinals of the league tournament.
Nichols came to BGSU after spending the 2008 season as assistant coach at Davidson College. Prior to his stint at Davidson, Nichols was the head men's soccer coach at Ohio Dominican for four seasons (2004-07), guiding the Panthers to a record of 59-22-1 (.728), including a final ranking of fourth in 2007. That team advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament. Nichols played collegiately at Ohio State, and also played five years of professional soccer for several teams, including the Columbus Xoggz and Indiana Blast of the USISL.
ERIC NICHOLS YEAR BY YEAR AT BGSU
2009 -- 3-12-3 overall (2-3-1 MAC)
2010 -- 6-9-3 overall (3-3-0 MAC)
2011 -- 7-6-3 overall (1-3-1 MAC)
BGSU IN THE RPI
The NCAA released the second Men's Soccer RPI of the 2011 season last Tuesday (Oct. 25), and the Falcons were ranked 134th in the nation, out of 203 schools. Each of BGSU's two opponents last week, Akron (11th) and NIU (16th), were ranked 16th or better. BG's remaining opponents, Wright State and Western Michigan, are ranked 111th and 166th, respectively.
BGSU IN THE RPI II
The Falcons were ranked 117th of 204 schools in last season's final NCAA Men's Soccer RPI. In the five years from 2005 through 2009, BGSU did not have an RPI higher than 152. In the '09 season, BG finished 180th of 204 schools in the final RPI.
THE CAPTAINS
Seniors Tanner Fink and Miguel Rosales and redshirt sophomore Brandon Silva are the tri-captains of the 2011 men's soccer Falcons.
UP NEXT
This week's matches mark the end of the regular season. Should the Falcons qualify for the MAC Tournament, BGSU would head to Akron as the tourney's fourth seed, and would take on the top-seeded Zips in semifinal-round action on Friday, Nov. 11.

In last year's regular-season meeting, Western scored twice in a four-minute span for a 2-0 win over the Falcons in BG (Oct. 1, 2010).
