Miller, in his 11th season at the BGSU helm, held his team's first practice of the season on Sunday (Oct. 2). Miller and his staff -- associate head coach Jennifer Roos, assistants Brandi Poole and Kevin Eckert and director of operations Monique Rosati -- have a young team, with nine freshmen or sophomores on the 15-player roster.
Last year's edition of the Falcons finished with an overall record of 28-5. That team won the Mid-American Conference's East Division title with a 13-3 league mark, then went on to win the MAC Tournament and advance to the NCAA Championships for the second-straight March.
The Falcons graduated six talented seniors from last year's squad. That group -- Chelsea Albert, Maggie Hennegan, Tracy Pontius, Lauren Prochaska, Jen Uhl and Kelly Zuercher -- helped BGSU post a record of 110-25 during their careers. Hennegan, who played two seasons at BG after transferring from Saint Louis University, helped the Falcons to MAC Tournament championships and NCAA tourney appearances in each of her two years. Additionally, that group combined for career totals of 5,469 points, 2,365 rebounds and 927 assists at BG.
"Our program has worked hard to create a culture of championships," said Miller. "Despite the graduation of a very talented class, our expectations have not changed.
"It is exciting to teach our system to such a young team while building the foundation to be playing our best basketball in March. We are pleased with the effort during our first few practices, but acknowledge the goal to get better each and every day."
BGSU has advanced to national postseason play in each of the last seven seasons.
The lone senior on the 2011-12 is Jessica Slagle. Slagle played in all 33 games off the bench a year ago, averaging nearly four points per game and shooting almost 43 percent from three-point land. Slagle and her fellow tri-captains, junior Chrissy Steffen and redshirt junior Danielle Havel, will be asked to provide leadership, both on and off the court, for their youthful teammates.
Steffen, the lone returning starter from a year ago, finished third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.4 ppg. She also made 55 three-pointers and averaged better than four rebounds per contest. Havel, a high-school teammate of Steffen's in Carmel, Ind., came off the bench to play in every game last year, and stepped up her game come MAC Tournament time. Havel averaged just over two points on the season, but had 4.3 points per game in the three games in Cleveland, and chipped in with contributions in numerous other statistical categories as the Falcons won all three games at Quicken Loans Arena to return to the NCAA Championships for the fifth time in seven years.
The Falcons' other returning letterwinners include redshirt junior Maribeth Giese, true juniors Simone Eli and Allison Papenfuss, and sophomores Jillian Halfhill, Jill Stein and Noelle Yoder.
Miller and Company welcome five talented freshmen to the Falcon fold. That group includes Deborah Hoekstra, Kaila Hulls, Jasmine Matthews, Shanique Ogle and Logan Pastor. Additionally, Alexis Rogers joins the active roster in 2011-12. Rogers sat out last season with the Falcons, after transferring from Duke University. Rogers maintains three seasons of eligibility.
The Falcons' lone exhibition game will be Tuesday, Nov. 1, vs. Findlay. The regular season begins with a Nov. 11 game at Dayton, and the first women's basketball regular-season game in Stroh Center history is set for Thursday, Nov. 17, as Purdue comes to town.
