BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University football team lost a hard-fought battle with the Ohio Bobcats on Wednesday (Nov. 16) at Bowling Green's Doyt Perry Stadium. The lead changed hands five times. The last came on a game-winning field goal as time expired, which gave Ohio a 29-28 win in the Falcons' final home game of the 2011 season.
The game started out well for the Falcons, especially on the defensive side of the ball. After Ohio forced a punt on the opening drive, the Orange and Brown created a turnover on the Bobcats' second play from scrimmage. Chris Jones stripped Tyler Tettleton, and Dwayne Woods recoverd at OU's 22 yard line.
Bowling Green wasted little time in turning the gift into points. Matt Schilz connected with Anthon Samuel to the 10, and a late hit penalty pushed the ball to the five. From there, Schilz passed over the middle to Tyler Beck for the game's opening points and a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing drive, Ohio drove to BGSU's 17-yard line. However, Cameron Truss caused Derek Roback to fumble away a reception. Woods again recovered and returned the ball to the BG 48. This time, no points came from the turnover, as three Schilz incompletions from the OU 40 resulted in a punt.
Ohio finally got on the scoreboard by driving 58 yards in 11 plays. A holding penalty stalled their drive, but enough yards had been earned for Matt Weller to push through a 31-yard field goal.
At the start of the second quarter, Bowling Green got the ball back on their own 37. On the first play of the drive, Samuel rushed left and met Ohio's Noah Keller. Keller forced Samuel to fumble and recovered the ball himself to give the Bobcats possession at the BGSU 41.
Five plays later, the Bobcats set foot in the end zone for the first time. Tettleton threw to LaVon Brazill for a 24-yard score and gave OU a 10-7 lead, their first of the night.
The Falcons were undaunted and responded with a scoring drive of their own to reclaim the lead. Starting from their own 32, BGSU drove 68 yards in eight plays. Four of those were completions to Kamar Jorden, including a 14-yard catch on third-and-nine.
Alex Bayer also caught an 18-yard throw on the drive. Jorden's six-yard reception with 7:50 left in the half ended the drive and gave BG a 14-10 advantage.
Tettleton led Ohio into Bowling Green territory on their next drive, but the Falcon defense held and Keith Morgan blocked Ohio's punt. BGSU took over at theri own 43. However, on the next play, Schilz fumbled and Ohio converted the turnover into a field goal.
With 1:27 left in the half, Schilz led the Falcons on a nice two-minute drill that took the ball deep into Ohio's side of the field. Unfortunately, with less than 20 seconds left in the half, Schilz was intercepted by Travis Carrie. Carrie returned the ball 81 yards to BGSU's seven, and the game saw it's third lead change as Ohio took a 16-14 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the teams combined for only seven possessions. The offenses dominated, scoring on five of the seven, as the defenses forced only one punt.
Weller connected on a 49-yard field goal on the opening drive of the second half to give OU a 19-14 lead. The Falcons responded with a nine-play touchdown drive.
On the drive, Schilz connected with Eugene Cooper twice for important gains. The second pass resulted in a 17-yard gain on third-and-10 from BG's own 48. Samuel capped the drive with four straight runs, including a 27-yard gain inside the OU five followed by a three-yard jaunt into the end zone.
Nursing a 21-19 lead, Bowling Green forced Ohio into another field goal attempt on the next drive. This time, Weller missed from 47 yards away -- it was his only miss in six attempts during the game.
Schilz went back to work and drove the Falcons to another touchdown. Jorden caught a pass for 22 yards, but Cooper was Schilz's main target on the 10-play, five-minute drive. Cooper caught three balls. The final catch was a three-yard pass into the end zone that gave Bowling Green a two-score, 28-19, advantage.
Ohio's Donte Harden returned the following kickoff to Bowling Green's 46, and OU took just five plays to score. Tettleton put Ohio back in the game with a 31-yard touchdown run to cut BGSU's lead to 28-26.
The Falcons were able to take four minutes off the clock in the next drive and took the ball down to the Bobcat 40. Ohio's defense refused to allow any more, and the Falcons punted the ball to OU's 10 yard line with 7:34 to play in the game.
Bowling Green's offense would not see the field again.
Tettleton and Harden rushed 11 times on the game-winning drive, while Tettleton peppered in four passes. Bowling Green jumped offsides on a fourth-and-one at the BG 46, then Ohio converted a third-and-one to give them the chance to run the clock out completely. Weller's 23-yard field goal as time expired gave Ohio a 29-28 victory.
For the game, Ohio outgained Bowling Green 447-347. The Falcons passed for 232 yards and rushed for 115.
Schilz finished the game 23-for-34 with 232 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Jorden caught eight of those passes for 87 yards, while Cooper brought in seven for 63. Both caught a touchdown pass.
Samuel rushed 14 times for 67 yards and a touchdown in the losing effort.
Ohio's Tettleton passed for 194 yards and rushed for 128 more, accounting for 322 yards of offense and two touchdowns. Harden rushed for 70 yards, while Beau Blankenship provided 55 more. Riley Dunlop led Bobcat receivers with five catches for 96 yards.
The loss drops Bowling Green to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the Mid-American Conference. Ohio's victory gives them the 2011 MAC Eastern Division championship. The Bobcats are 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the MAC.
The Falcons will play their final game of the 2011 season at noon on Friday, Nov. 25 at Buffalo.
