Falcons Travel to Akron for Final Dual Meet of 2011
November 17, 2011 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's swimming team competes on Friday (Nov. 18) at Akron in the Falcons' final dual meet until January. The Zips will be BGSU's fourth Mid-American Conference opponent thus far this season.
The meet will be held in Akron's Ocasek Natatorium. The 16-event meet includes 100- and 200-meter events in the breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, as well as 50-, 100-, 200 and 500-meter events in freestyle. The other six events include the 1000 freestyle, 400 individual medley, 400 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, and one- and three-meter diving.
Bowling Green is led by juniors Emily Bennet and Alexis Kain. Bennet has won seven of her eight individual races this season. In BGSU's last meet, against Eastern Michigan, Bennet won the 50 free (0:23.93). She also won the 100 free with a season-best time of 0:51.82. Bennet is also one of the Falcons' primary relay swimmers, and her teams have won five of six races to date.
Kain has finished first or second in each of her eight breaststroke races in 2011. Her six wins are split evenly between the 100- and 200-meter variety, and she swept both races against Eastern Michigan and in the season-opening tri-meet against John Carroll and Oakland. Kain's 200-meter time of 2:21.54 versus EMU is her season best.
Five other Falcons own event victories from across the event spectrum. Vicky Yu has wins in both the 100- and 200-meter butterfly. Emily Waller owns a victory in the 200 IM, and both she and Erica Nieminen have distance freestyle wins. Alexa Harris (backstroke) and Sarah Reinink (sprint freestyle) are also part of this group.
"I think that this will be a very interesting meet. It should be close, as we match up with Akron pretty well. They have posted good times this season, so we are looking forward to a challenge," the Falcons' second-year head coach Petra Martin said. "It's also important for us because the facility hosts this season's MAC Championships. It will be good experience as we continue to prepare for the Championships."
Akron enters the meet at 1-3 overall and have lost three in a row. That streak includes losses to Miami and Ball State. Their most recent meet was a 153-109 loss at St. Francis (Pa.). Zips' sophomore Catherine Carr had two event wins, as she took the top spot in the 200 backstroke and 400 individual medley.
Friday's meet is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.; results will be available on Friday evening. After the trip to Akron, Bowling Green competes at the TPSC Invitational at the beginning of December before resuming their dual meet schedule in January.
