AKRON, Ohio -- Senior Vicky Yu swept the butterfly events for the second time this season, but her effort could not lift the Falcons to victory as the Bowling Green State University swimming team lost a 185-109 decision to the University of Akron on Friday (Nov. 18). The meet was held in Akron, Ohio's Ocasek Natatorium.
Yu won the 200 butterfly with a final time of 2:05.32. She defeated Akron's Catherine Carr by 2.62 seconds. Carr led the race after 50 meters, but Yu's 0:31.57 split over the second 50 meters allowed her to take a lead she would not relinquish. In the 100-meter race, Yu finished in 0:58.28. She led throughout and outswam Carr by one second.
Yu finished fourth overall in the 400 individual medley, with a team-best time of 4:44.89. She also competed in the 400 medley relay. As the third leg, Yu helped her team finish in 3:54.98, which was good enough for the event win.
Two other Falcons won races on Friday. Alexis Kain took top honors in the 200 breaststroke, as her time (2:24.79) defeated teammate Amanda Rom by 1.76 seconds. Earlier in the meet, Kain and Rom had finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke. Kain trailed Akron's Kendra Colby by two-tenths of a second.
Emily Bennet won once again, this time in the 100-meter freestyle. Bennet topped Jessica Ickes with a final mark of 0:52.99. In the 50-meter race, Bennet lost by one of the smallest margins possible -- just 0.06 seconds -- as she placed second in just 0:24.32. Both Sarah Reinink and Brittany Szekely also ended the race within one second of the winner.
Reinink earned fourth overall in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle.
Although they did not win in their respective events, Alexa Harris and Erica Nieminen also provided strong showings for the Falcons. Harris placed second in both the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and finished less than one second behind the winner in both races. Nieminen finished second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle.
Harris joined Bennet, Kain and Yu on the winning 400 medley relay team.
The Falcons' next competition takes place in two weeks in Kenyon, Ohio at the TPSC Invitational from Dec. 1-3. After that, the team resumes dual meet competition in January.
