November 30, 2011 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University swimming team faces a multi-day meet and championship conditions for the first time this season when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for the 2011 Total Performance Kenyon Invitational. The event is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday (Dec. 1-3).
The meet, which will be held at Kenyon College's Kenyon Athletic Center, employs a format similar to the one used at the Mid-American Conference championship meets. Various individual and relay events will take place on each day, with preliminary heats of the individual events occuring in the morning and timed finals for all events in the evening.
On Thursday, individuals will swim the 1650 freestyle, while teams compete in the 800 freestyle relay.
Friday's slate includes nine events. Individual swimmers face the 50 and 200 freestyle, as well as the 400 individual medley, 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. The meet's second day also features the 200 free and 400 medlay relays.
The final two relays (200 medley, 400 free) highlight Saturday's action. The final individual events include the 100 and 500 free, 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke.
Preliminary individual races begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The finals begin at 5:30 p.m. on each night of the meet.
The Falcons will be facing unfamiliar competition at Kenyon. Aside from the host school, Bowling Green swimmers square off against athletes from Davidson College, Grove City College, Carnegie-Mellon University and the University of Pennsylvania.
Falcons' head coach Petra Martin said, "We are excited about the upcoming meet at Kenyon. It will be great preparation for the MAC Championships, and the facility is great. It will also be a challenge to swim against teams we have not seen before."
Also this weekend, Amanda Rom will fly to Atlanta, Ga. for the United States Long Course Nationals. While there, she will attempt to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200 breaststroke. Rom, along with teammate Alexis Kain, qualified for the trials in the 100 breaststroke last July.
