Falcons prepare for Green and White Invitational
The Bowling Green State University tennis team heads north this weekend, for the final tournament of the fall schedule. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean travel to East Lansing, Mich., to participate in the Green and White Invitational. The tournament, hosted by Michigan State University, begins Friday (Nov. 4) and runs through Sunday (Nov. 6).
In addition to the Falcons and the host Spartans, other schools scheduled to participate include Ball State, Detroit, Eastern Michigan and Wisconsin. Play is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. Friday, with one round each of doubles and singles. Saturday's play starts at 9:00 a.m., with two rounds of doubles and one singles round. On Sunday, beginning at 9:00 a.m., the competitors will play the final round of singles. Each competitor is guaranteed three singles matches, and each doubles team also will play a total of three matches.

The Green and White Invite will be the fourth tournament of the fall for some of the Falcons, and the fifth for others. Most recently, four of Dean's players took part in the ITA Midwest Regional in Columbus (Oct. 20-22).
All seven Falcon student-athletes have winning singles records this fall, and every BGSU doubles team to see action this season has a winning percentage of .500 or higher. In terms of winning pct., junior Katie Grubb leads the singles competitors with a 7-0 mark. Classmate Maddy Eccleston and sophomore Emily Reuland are tied for the team lead in singles wins, as both players sport identical 9-2 marks.
Sophomore Nikki Chiricosta is 8-3 in singles action to date, while junior Mary Hill is 8-4. Junior Jade Johnson and senior Jessica Easdale are 5-3 and 5-4, respectively.
Dean has mixed and matched her doubles teams through the first four fall events, using a total of nine different combinations to date. For the Green and White Invite, Chiricosta will be paired with Hill, while Grubb will team up with Reuland. Eccleston and Johnson also will pair up for this weekend's doubles action.
This year to date, the Chiricosta/Hill team has posted a 4-1 record. That duo played together for most of last season, posting a 17-5 overall record in 2010-11.
The Grubb/Reuland duo is a perfect 3-0 this year, having gone undefeated at Toledo's Rocket Invitational (Oct. 14-15). That team went 3-1 last season. The Eccleston/Johnson team is 3-2 this season and 4-2 all-time. The two juniors shared the court in both the BGSU Invitational (Sept. 16-17) and the Rocket Invite.
This weekend's tourney, as mentioned, is the final fall action for the Falcons. Following Sunday's play, the Brown and Orange will be idle from competition until a dual match at Duquesne on Jan. 21, 2012.
