BGSU wins 8 of 9 Friday matches in East Lansing
The Bowling Green State University tennis team got the weekend off to a tremendous start, winning eight of nine matches on Friday (Nov. 4) at the Green and White Invitational. The six-team, three-day tournament is being hosted by Michigan State University.
All three BGSU doubles teams won first-round matches on Friday afternoon, while five of the Falcons' six singles competitors won their matches in straight sets.
In singles play, junior Katie Grubb remained undefeated on the season with a win over Eastern Michigan University's Daphne Friedrichs on Friday. Grubb, who won a total of nine singles matches during the entire 2010-11 season, improved her record to a perfect 8-0 this fall.
In doubles play, Grubb teamed with sophomore Emily Reuland for a first-round victory over an EMU team in Flight-B action. Grubb and Reuland are unbeaten as a duo this fall, with a 4-0 record heading into Saturday's second-round match against a team from the University of Wisconsin.
BGSU's doubles teams each posted first-round wins as well. Junior Mary Hill teamed with sophomore Nikki Chiricosta for an 8-6 victory over an EMU duo at Flight A, while juniors Maddy Eccleston and Jade Johnson were 8-4 winners over Michigan State's Hager/Yen tandem in Flight-C play.
Johnson lost only three total games in her win over Ball State University's Kylee Johnson, en route to a win at Flight E. Eccleston and Hill won by identical 6-3, 6-2 scores on Friday, with Eccleston downing EMU's Mariya Toncheva at Flight B, and Hill defeating BSU's Sarah Hebble at Flight C.
Reuland also was a winner in singles play. Playing at Flight C, she outlasted MSU's Michaela Silesova in a narrow first set, then did not lose a game in the second set, quickly closing out the win.
BG's only loss of the day came at Flight A, where the Spartans' Valentina Rusakova got past Chiricosta.
The Green and White Invitational continues on Saturday (Nov. 5) with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. Saturday's action begins at 9:00 a.m. The tourney concludes on Sunday (Nov. 6) morning, with one final round of singles play.
