GREEN & WHITE INVITE - results through Saturday
Juniors Maddy Eccleston and Jade Johnson captured the doubles crown at Flight C on Saturday, while BG's other two doubles tandems lost in the championship match. In singles action, Eccleston, Johnson and fellow junior Katie Grubb all won Saturday matches to advance to the title contest.
BGSU posted combined records of 3-2 in singles and 4-2 in doubles play on Saturday. Through two days of the six-team, three-day invite, the Falcons have a combined singles mark of 8-3. BG finished doubles play with a 7-2 record.
Michigan State is hosting the tournament, which also includes Ball State, Detroit, Eastern Michigan and Wisconsin.
In doubles play, the Eccleston/Johnson team had defeated a Michigan State duo in Friday's first round. On Saturday, the Falcon juniors picked up a win over a split team (one player from EMU, one from UDM) to capture the title. With only four teams in the third flight, Eccleston and Johnson completed the round-robin play by posting a dominant 8-0 win over a Ball State duo in Saturday's second match. Eccleston and Johnson, after three wins together over the weekend, are now 6-2 this season.
Sophomore Nikki Chiricosta and junior Mary Hill competed for BGSU at Flight A, while Grubb and sophomore Emily Reuland comprised the Falcons' Flight-B team. Both duos had won a narrow match against an EMU team on Friday, and both BG tandems captured a victory over a Big Ten Conference opponent in Saturday's semifinal round. But, each Falcon team lost to a Wisconsin foe in the championship.
The Chiricosta/Hill team picked up an impressive 8-2 victory over a Michigan State duo in the semifinals, but the Falcons lost to UW's Stracar/Trgovich team, 8-3, in the finals. Grubb and Reuland posted a second-straight 9-7 victory, downing a Wisconsin team, before suffering a championship-round loss to another pair of Badgers.
In singles, Eccleston and Johnson each beat opponents from host MSU on Saturday. At Flight B, Eccleston was a straight-sets winner over Kat Lingl, with a 6-2 victory in the first set and a 6-3 decision in the second. Eccleston, who now has a team-leading 11 singles wins this fall, will face UW's Alexandra Markovic in Sunday's championship match.
At Flight D, Grubb won yet again, downing Ball State's Dena Boulieris in the minimum two sets to advance to the finals. After winning a total of nine singles matches during all of last season, Grubb has matched that total by early November this academic year. She is a perfect 9-0 in singles action this season to date.
Grubb will face UW's Caroline Bauer in championship-round action on Sunday.
Johnson downed MSU's Hilary Hager at Flight E on Saturday, losing a total of just six games. The BG junior has won two matches in straight sets this weekend to date, and will meet the Spartans' Dana Guentert on Sunday in the flight championship.
Reuland suffered a loss to UW's Lauren Gruber in the semifinals of Flight C on Saturday. The setback was only the third in Reuland's 13 singles matches this year. She will meet Julianna Gruber of MSU on Sunday.
Hill, like Reuland, was defeated in the second round in the C Flight. She won her opening set on Saturday against EMU's Ankita Bhatia, but Bhatia responded by winning a pair of narrow sets, with a 7-5 verdict in each. Hill will meet MSU's Michaela Silesova on Sunday.
Chiricosta did not play a singles match on Saturday, advancing by default in her scheduled match against EMU's Miriam Westerink. The BG soph will meet BSU's Courtney Wild in Sunday's back-draw final at Flight A.
The three-day tourney concludes on Sunday with the final round of singles matches. All of the results through Saturday's play can be found by clicking the PDF near the top of this page.
