BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- In their final meet at Cooper Pool until the end of January, the Bowling Green State University swimming team competed well and won six events but ultimately fell to Eastern Michigan University on Saturday (Nov. 5), 171-123.
Emily Bennet and Alexis Kain continued their dominance for the Falcons in the freestyle and breaststroke events, as the pair combined for four wins in five starts on Saturday.
Bennet has won seven of her eight individual races this season, including all six over the last three meets. On Saturday, she won the 100 free in a season-best time of 0:51.82 and defeated EMU's Sara Ghaffari by nearly two seconds. Earlier in the meet, she won the 50 free and led the Falcons to a sweep of the top three spots in the event.
Bennet also swam in the opening leg for BGSU's primary 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays teams. Both teams won thei respective events.
Kain swept the breaststroke events for the second time this season. In the 200 breast, Kain set a personal-best time for the season and needed every second of it to win the event. Her time (2:21.54) beat EMU's Monica Dorszewski by less than a half-second. The 100 breast race was nearly as close, and Kain won with a mark of 1:05.74.
Kain competed as the second leg on the winning 200 medley relay team for the Falcons.
Like Bennet, Sarah Reinink was part of both winning relay teams. In the individual events, she posted a season-best time (0:24.45) in the 50 free to finish just behind Bennet. She finished third in the 100 free with her second-best time of the season.
Vicky Yu also earned a season-best time on Saturday, when she placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:04.65). Overall, the Falcons had 18 different season-best times during Saturday's meet.
BGSU swimming head coach Petra Martin said, "We had a very good meet today. We were much more aggressive right from the get-go, and we raced with more 'swagger'. That is exactly what I wanted to see. The sprinters did a nice job on cleaning out the short freestyle events, both relays and both breaststrokes."
Martin also said, "Our distance and mid-distance crews stepped up, as well, and went after their races with no regrets. We are learning, getting better, stronger and more confident. We are starting to show some teeth. It was a good day for us."
The Falcons will close out their dual meet portion of the fall schedule on Nov. 18th at Akron.
