Falcons Resume Dual Meet Schedule With Trip to Buffalo
January 19, 2012 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University swimming team begins their final trek towards the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships this week by resuming their 2011-12 dual meet schedule. With just one month until the conference meet, the Falcons will compete three times in an eight-day span. This journey begins with a meet at Buffalo on Saturday, Jan. 21.
Since their last dual meet, in November, the Falcons have finished third at the TPSC Invitational (hosted by Kenyon College) and have traveled to Florida for a week-long training trip. During that trip, the team scrimmaged against the Michigan State University swimming team.
"We are looking forward to getting another travel meet under our belt before the MAC Championships. Buffalo has been swimming very well this season, so it will be a very good match-up for us," head coach Petra Martin said. "Our team has had very strong training over the last few weeks, and our swimmers want to peak at the championship meet."
Buffalo is indeed swimming well; the Bulls have won two dual meets this month (versus Niagara and Binghamton). The Bulls also finished third at the Akron Invitational in December.
Of course, the Falcons put together their best performances of the year at the team's most recent event, the TPSC Invitational, and they have compiled some of the best times in the MAC this season.
In the sprint freestyle events, Brittany Szekely and Sarah Reinink have placed themselves among the MAC's elite. Szekely's time in the 50 free (0:23.66) ranks seventh, while Reinink is fifth in the conference with a time of 0:51.54 in the 100 free. Reinink, Szekely and Emily Bennet are in the top 15 of the conference in both events. Meanwhile, Emily Waller ranks among the MAC's top ten in four events -- the 200, 500, 1000 and 1650 free.
Alexis Kain currently owns the MAC's top times in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Her blazing swim at the TPSC Invite (1:02.43) met the NCAA's "B" qualifying standard for this year's national championship meet. Alexa Harris (backstroke) and Vicky Yu (butterfly) are both also among the conference leaders in their respective events.
Saturday's meet is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., and results will be posted to BGSUFalcons.com on Saturday evening.
After competing in Buffalo, the Falcons will conclude their dual meet schedule by hosting Youngstown State and Miami University at Cooper Pool on back-to-back days. BGSU will host Youngstown on Friday, Jan. 27 and Miami on Saturday, Jan. 28.
