FALCONS CLOSE WEST PLAY AT CENTRAL MICHIGAN
Sitting in a three-way tie for second place in the Mid-American Conference, Bowling Green plays its final game against a West Division opponent, playing on the road against Central Michigan Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Falcons have gone 4-1 against the West so far to improve to 7-3 in conference play this year. Bowling Green is .500 at 12-12 on the year, a remarkable feat considering the team started the year just 1-8. Central Michigan has one of the top freshmen in the country in Trey Ziegler but has struggled to a 6-17 start, including 3-7 in MAC play.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
• At 7-3, Bowling Green has already won more Mid-American Conference games than it did a year ago when the team went 6-10 and were the No. 10 seed for the MAC Tournament.
• The Falcons have held five consecutive opponents to 41.1 percent shooting or less, picking up wins over Toledo (40.0 percent), Eastern Michigan (39.2 percent), Northern Illinois (36.5 percent), and Ball State (41.1 percent). Bowling Green lost to Western Michigan despite holding the Broncos to 41 percent shooting. Central Michigan is shooting just 37.5 percent from the field for the year.
• Scott Thomas had scored in double-figures in nine consecutive games before being held to nine points against Ball State. He is averaging 14.7 points and 6.4 rebounds, while shooting 49.1 percent from the field, in conference play. Thomas has had a steal in every conference game and at least two in nine of the 10 contests to lead the MAC in steals.
• Bowling Green ranks fifth in the country in steals at 9.7 per game. The Falcons have at least six steals in every conference game this year and at least eight in 8-of-10 league games. The team had 13 Wednesday in a win over Ball State.
THE SERIES
Bowling Green is 36-30 in 66 all-time meetings against Central Michigan dating back to a 65-58 win over the Chippewas on Dec. 7, 1946. A year ago, Bowling Green lost to Central Michigan 64-52 in Anderson Arena but the Falcons won two years ago in McGuirk Arena 67-61. In fact, Bowling Green has won five of the last six meetings in Mount Pleasant.
SCOUTING THE CENTRAL MICHIGAN CHIPPEWAS
Central Michigan has stumbled to a 6-17 start to the year, including a 3-7 mark in conference play. The Chippewas biggest struggles have come on the offensive end, where Central Michigan is shooting just 37.5 percent from the field, 32.6 percent from three-point range, and 62.2 percent from the free-throw line. CMU does have one of the best freshmen in the country in Trey Zeigler, the son of head coach Ernie Zeigler. Trey is averaging 16.7 points, while senior Jalin Thomas is at 15.7 points. No other Central Michigan player is averaging more than 6.1 points.
FALCONS HOLD OFF BALL STATE FOR KEY MAC WIN
Bowling Green picked up a big conference win Wednesday, defeating MAC West leader Ball State 65-64. Both teams entered the game at 6-3 in the league but the Falcons overcame an early nine-point deficit to lead by as many as 10 in the second half. Although Ball State never tied or took the lead in the second half, the Cardinals hung around until A'uston Calhoun hit back-to-back buckets and Jordon Crawford knocked down a three-pointer to put Bowling Green up by eight. Ball State tried to make a furious comeback but the Cardinals' basket at the buzzer only got them within one.
