Mount Pleasant, Mich. – Dee Brown scored 20 points and handed out five assists but the Bowling Green men's basketball team was unable to go on the road and secure a win Saturday night, losing to Central Michigan 69-64.
With the loss, Bowling Green falls back below .500 overall at 12-13 and drops to 7-4 in Mid-American Conference play. Although Central Michigan is just 7-17 overall and 4-7 in the MAC, the Chippewas did improve to 4-1 at home in conference play.
McGuirk Arena has been a difficult place for MAC schools to get victories all year and Central Michigan weathered an early push by the Falcons and came from behind late to get the win.
Bowling Green led 11-4 on a Scott Thomas jumper with 14:37 to play in the first half and still held that seven-point edge at 19-12 almost three minutes later. But Central Michigan used an 11-2 run to take a short-live 23-21 lead with 6:14 remaining in the opening frame.
A'uston Calhoun answered with five straight points but Central Michigan would briefly regain the lead on a Trey Zeigler lay-up with 2:37 left that made it 29-28. The Falcons closed the half with a 9-2 run, capped by a Brown lay-up at the buzzer for a 37-31 lead.
Brown scored 14 points in the first half and Bowling Green shot 67 percent from the field. However, eight Falcon turnovers and eight Chippewa offensive rebounds helped CMU stay within striking distance.
The Falcons pushed the lead to eight on a Joe Jakubowski lay-up to start the second half but Central Michigan stormed back and it was nip-and-tuck throughout the rest of the final 20 minutes.
The Chippewas took their first lead of the second half on a John Morris lay-up with 8:03 to go. The Falcons quickly took the lead back on a Calhoun three-point play at 51-49 but that was their final lead of the game. Jalin Thomas answered with a three-pointer and Central Michigan never trailed again.
Jakubowski did hit a three-pointer with 4:13 left to bring Bowling Green back within one point and Zeigler and Scott Thomas exchanged buckets to make it 61-60 with just 1:51 to go. But the Falcons were unable to get a defensive stop as Jalin Thomas and Andres Coimbra scored back-to-back to make it 65-60 with 40 seconds left.
Calhoun was fouled trying to slam home an inbounds pass with 29 seconds left and made both free-throws to cut the deficit to three. The Falcons fouled Zeigler and he missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Brown was fouled with 22 seconds left and he made both to make it 65-64 but Jalin Thomas answered with two free-throws a second later for a three-point Chippewa lead.
That set up Bowling Green's last opportunity and Calhoun's long three-pointer with 14 seconds left rimmed out. Scott Thomas was called for traveling after trying to track down the rebound and getting stuck in the air and Central Michigan sealed the game at the line.
Brown made 7-of-10 shots and 5-of-6 free-throws for his game-high 20 points. Calhoun added 15 points and six rebounds, while Jakubowski had 12 points. Thomas finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
After shooting 67 percent in the opening half, the Falcons were just 32 percent from the floor in the second half. Central Michigan, which entered the game as the worst shooting team in the MAC at 37.5 percent, shot 49 percent for the game and made 6-of-15 three-pointers (40 percent).
Bowling Green heads back to East Division play and hosts a key game Tuesday against Akron at 7 p.m. The Zips are 6-5 in MAC play, just one game behind the Falcons in the standings.
