Baton Rouge, La. – No. 19 LSU held the Bowling Green softball team scoreless for the second straight day, defeating the Falcons 6-0 Saturday afternoon on day two of the LSU Tiger Classic. The Falcons fall to 0-3 on the year as LSU improves to 3-0.
LSU pitcher Meghan Patterson scattered four BGSU hits over seven innings, striking out 11 batters without a walk. Paige Berger went 2-for-3 and Hannah Fulk had her second double of the season but the Falcons were unable to mount many offensive threats.
Bowling Green freshman Erin Greenwalt took the mound against the 19th ranked team in the country and she wriggled out of a first inning jam before giving up a run in the second on a walk, a stolen base, and a two-out single.
LSU blew it open in the third with three runs on four hits and an error. Greenwalt made way for Melissa Bott after 2.2 innings and Bott went the next 2.1 innings, giving up one run and two hits. Zada Lines pitched the bottom of the sixth, giving up a run on two hits.
The Falcons' biggest chance came in the sixth when Lines had a one-out pinch hit single and Fulk followed with a double to put two runners in scoring postion. But Rachel Proehl lined into a double play.
Bowling Green will face Louisiana Tech later Saturday and the Falcons lost to the Lady Techsters 4-1 Friday. The Falcons will complete the 2011 opening weekend with a game against Purdue Sunday.
