Baton Rouge, La. – Sparked by a two-run homerun off the bat of sophomore catcher Adrienne Dick, the Bowling Green State University softball team rallied back from a 5-0 deficit against Louisiana Tech but the Falcons came up one run short of tying the game in a 5-4 loss to the Lady Techsters Saturday evening on day two of the LSU Tiger Classic.
Louisiana Tech scored two runs in the second and three in the third and looked as if it would cruise to its second win over Bowling Green in as many days. But the Falcons battled back with a run in the third, two more in the fourth and then another in the seventh. In fact, Bowling Green left the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh.
After struggling so far during the opening weekend of the 2011 season, the Bowling Green offense woke up in the bottom of the third inning against Louisiana Tech. Andrea Arney worked a one-out walk and Hannah Fulk followed with a single to left. Arney would eventually score on a fielding error that cut the deficit to four at 5-1.
In the fourth, Bowling Green built on the momentum and Katie Yoho worked a two-out walk, followed by Dick's blast to make it 5-3. The Falcons then had a chance to score in the fifth with a runner on third and just one out, but Paige Berger and Erika Stratton struck out to end the threat.
The Falcons again tried to push a run across in the sixth and had a runner on third with two outs but Louisiana Tech worked out of the jam.
In the seventh, Arney opened the frame by doubling down the left field line. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Fulk's sacrifice fly to make it 5-4. Rachel Proehl followed with a one-out single and Berger flied out to center for the second out. Stratton singled up the middle to put the tie run on second but Zada Lines grounded out to second for the final out.
Melissa Bott took the loss on the hill, falling to 0-2 by allowing two earned runs in four innings. Lines pitched two scoreless innings and Jessica Odell saw her first action of the year on the hill, pitching one scoreless frame.
Bowling Green, now 0-4 on the year, will face Purdue Sunday on the final day of the LSU Tiger Classic.
