BGSU picks up road win over a 2010 NCAA Tournament team
The Bowling Green State University tennis team went on the road to pick up a victory over the two-time defending Summit League champions Saturday night (Feb. 12), with a 5-2 win over IPFW. The non-league dual match was held at the Pine Ridge Racquet & Fitness Club.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 6-2 in duals this season, and BGSU has won six of the last seven contests. The Mastodons, who advanced to the NCAA Championships last season, are now 7-2.
"This was a tight match, but we were able to come out on top," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "It could have gone either way for a while, but we really wanted it, and we showed a lot of toughness against a very strong IPFW team."
BG earned the doubles point with a blowout win and a pair of come-from-behind victories. At the top doubles flight, there was no doubt about the outcome, as senior Christine Chiricosta and sophomore Maddy Eccleston teamed up for an 8-0 win.
Falcon freshmen Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland trailed their IPFW foes, Alex Forsyth and Caterina Kiefer, by a 5-4 count at the second flight. But, the BGSU team then reeled off four-straight games to take an 8-5 decision.
The Falcons' third-flight tandem of sophomores Katie Grubb and Mary Hill trailed by a 7-4 decision in their match. But, with IPFW's Raquel Vescovi and Yuka Kobayashi needing to win just one more game to take the match, Grubb and Hill systematically battled back, eventually winning a tiebreaker for a 9-8 decision.
BGSU took four of the six singles matches that counted in the final scoring, including a lopsided win by Nikki Chiricosta. The freshman lost only one game in her two-set sweep of Vescovi at the third flight.
Eccleston and junior Jessica Easdale also won in straight sets, with Eccleston downing Kobayashi at the fifth flight and Easdale topping Forsyth at the sixth. Easdale's win clinched the match for the Brown and Orange.
Hill battled Ingrid Ballus in a close match at the second flight. Hill, an Indiana native, won the opening set before Ballus evened the match with a second-set victory. But, the BG soph picked up the victory with a 10-6 win in a third-set tiebreaker.
IPFW's two points came at the top flight, where Amy Recht -- the Summit League Player of the Year in each of her first three seasons -- downed Christine Chiricosta, and at the fourth flight. The fourth-flight match saw Reuland battle Kiefer into a third set before the IPFW player pulled out the win.
BGSU has three Indiana natives - Hill, Grubb and fellow sophomore Jade Johnson -- on the eight-player roster. Johnson, who hails from Fort Wayne, won in seventh-flight action in her hometown on Saturday, in a match that did not count in the final scoring.
BGSU is now 2-0 in the all-time series with IPFW, having defeated the 'Dons last season at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. IPFW went on to finish 24-6 in dual matches last year, winning the Summit League regular-season and tourney titles and advancing to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history.
The Falcons fly to the Rockies next weekend for a pair of matches in Colorado. BGSU will take on Air Force and Colorado State in a pair of matches in Colorado Springs.
