In a match that lasted nearly five-and-a-half hours, host Air Force Academy picked up a 5-2 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday (Feb. 18).
The home team captured the doubles point, then won four of the six singles matches at the AFA Indoor Courts. With the win, the USAFA Falcons improve to 8-2 on the season. The BGSU Falcons drop to 6-3 in dual-match play.
The (BGSU) Falcons' points came from senior Christine Chiricosta and sophomore Maddy Eccleston. That duo won an 8-5 decision at the top doubles flight, and both players won their singles contests.
The (USAFA) Falcons won the other two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, and five of the six singles matches required three sets.
Eccleston's singles match was the first to finish, and was the lone singles contest to be decided in two sets. The BGSU soph closed out Hannah Duke at the fifth flight by scores of 6-3 and 7-5.
At the second flight, soph Mary Hill battled Melissa Cecil to a third set, but dropped that third set by a 6-2 final. Christine Chiricosta, however, rebounded from a first-set loss for 6-4 wins over Christen Monreal in the second and third sets at the number-one flight.
USAFA's Tahlia Smoke barely squeezed past freshman Nikki Chiricosta, winning a tiebreaker after their third set went to a 6-6 draw. Smoke's win gave the home team a 3-2 lead, and Sara Cassman clinched the win with a three-set win over freshman Emily Reuland at the fourth flight.
At the sixth level, Anastasia Hueffner got past junior Jessica Easdale with a 7-5 win in the third set.
Christine Chiricosta, already the winningest player in BGSU history, now has a total of 159 combined career wins. Her singles victory gives her a total of 80, moving her within one of the school record. Stefanie Menoff (2006-09) holds the BG career record with 81 singles victories.
Chiricosta now has 79 career doubles victories, and is second on that BGSU list. Jenny Cheung (84 doubles wins from 1995-98) holds that school career record.
Bowling Green remains in Colorado Springs for a Saturday (Feb. 19) match vs. Colorado State University.
