BGSU heads westward to meet Air Force, as well as Colorado State
The Bowling Green State University tennis team will head to Colorado for a pair of matches this weekend. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will face another set of Falcons, taking on the U.S. Air Force Academy on Friday (Feb. 18), before meeting Colorado State University on Saturday (Feb. 19).

Both matches will be held in Colorado Springs, on the USAFA campus. Friday's match vs. Air Force is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. local time (10:30 a.m. Eastern), while Saturday's CSU dual begins at 10:00 a.m. locally (noon Eastern).
The Falcons enter the weekend with a record of 6-2 in dual matches this season to date. Last weekend, BGSU played just one match, posting a 5-2 win at IPFW on Saturday night (Feb. 12). IPFW, a 2010 NCAA Championships participant, has won 30 of the team's last 36 dual matches, but two of those six losses have come to the Brown and Orange.
BGSU won all three doubles matches and four of the six singles contests vs. the Mastodons. Falcon competitors have combined for a singles mark of 97-42, including a 31-17 mark in dual-match play. BG doubles teams are 46-21 overall and 17-7 in duals this year to date.
Freshman Nikki Chiricosta continued her stellar play last weekend, with a lopsided win at the third singles flight and a doubles victory at the second level. She teamed with classmate Emily Reuland for the doubles win. Chiricosta is 6-2 in dual-match singles play, and has a team-best 18-4 overall singles record in her initial season. She and Reuland have combined for a 6-2 doubles mark in duals as well.
BGSU's three doubles teams all have posted winning records in dual-match action. Senior Christine Chiricosta, the winningest player in BG tennis history, has combined with sophomore Maddy Eccleston for a 5-3 record in dual-match play at the top flight. Two other sophs, Katie Grubb and Mary Hill, are 6-2 at the third flight since the onset of the dual-match schedule.
In singles action, Eccleston (fifth flight) and junior Jessica Easdale (sixth flight), like Nikki Chiricosta, have 6-2 records since the New Year, while Hill is 5-3 at the second flight.
Air Force enters the weekend with a 7-2 record, and the Falcons have won seven consecutive matches after losing to Colorado and Denver to open dual-match action. Last weekend, USAFA won a pair of home matches on Saturday, downing Wofford, 5-2, and South Dakota, 7-0. The team went 16-12 last year, finishing with a 2-6 record in Mountain West Conference regular-season matches.
Colorado State is 2-2 on the year, having also lost to Denver in the dual opener before playing three matches last weekend. The Rams ventured to Colorado Springs to face USD and Wofford last weekend, splitting those matches. CSU swept South Dakota, 7-0, on Friday (Feb. 11), but dropped a 5-2 decision to Wofford the next day. The Rams returned home to face Montana on Sunday (Feb. 13), getting back in the win column with a 4-3 triumph. Last season, CSU went 8-15 overall and 1-7 in MWC play.
BGSU will be meeting both Air Force and Colorado State for the second time on the tennis court. Almost exactly a decade ago (Feb. 23, 2001), Dean's club went to Colorado Springs and dropped a 6-1 decision to USAFA. The following year, the Falcons met CSU in neutral-site action, with the Rams picking up a 5-2 win (March 12, 2002) in Newport Beach, Calif.
Following this weekend's matches, the Falcons will return to the Midwest to prepare for a match at Detroit next Sunday, March 27.
