Baton Rouge, La. – Purdue scored twice in the third and then rode the arm of senior pitcher Suzie Rzegocki to a 2-0 win over the Bowling Green softball team Sunday morning on the final day of the 2011 opening weekend. The Falcons went 0-5 at the LSU Tiger Classic.
Melissa Bott started on the mound for Bowling Green and shut down Purdue in the first two innings. However, she ran into trouble in the third and allowed two runs on four hits. Freshman pitcher Erin Greenwalt relieved Bott in the fourth and had arguably her best outing of her young career, allowing just two hits and no walks over the final four innings, striking out five.
Bowling Green had just three hits on the day but two of them came from leadoff batters in the inning, allowing the Falcons to put some pressure on Purdue. In the fourth, Erika Stratton led off with a single. Jenny Kelley came on to pinch run and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt but she was stranded there.
The Falcons' best chance came in the sixth when Paige Berger led off the frame with a double. However, Stratton struck out and Zada Lines lined into a double play to end the threat.
Throughout the opening weekend, Bowling Green struggled to hit but sophomore Hannah Fulk was a bright spot. She had a hit in her only official at-bat of the day and finished the weekend hitting .538 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. She also walked twice for a .563 on-base percentage during the five games and was named to the LSU Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team.
Purdue improved to 2-1 with the victory. The Falcons have two weeks off before hitting the diamond again for the Phyllis Rafter Memorial hosted by Kennesaw State in Kennesaw, Ga. Feb. 25-27.
